What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Part of our mission is to educate the public about hospice. Since we are an all-volunteer group, we have been lacking in resources to accomplish this goal.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Respite Care Fund

Family members who are caring for a loved one at home 24 hours a day, every day, are at great risk of jeopardizing their health. 40% of caregivers who take care of an Alzheimer patient at home die before the patient: with age, that statistic goes up. Respite care for this overworked caregiver is where we hope to make a difference. We keep $30,000.00 funded at all times to give 3-day professional care to the patient which allows the over-worked family member time to totally rest. As our population ages, we hope to increase funds in this area.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Friends of Hospice SWWA will be offering educational opportunities to health care professionals and the general public about end of life hospice care and its benefits to both the patient and the family. We plan on training a group of speakers to reach out to any group who has an interest in hospice care in our community. Additionally, we are currently adding an existing group of professionals to our membership whose main goal is training caregivers and other healthcare providers about the benefits of end of life care through hospice.

We have a group of active professionals in the hospice field who are joining Friends of Hospice Southwest Washington and will be holding educational functions in our area, e.g. training caregivers and other healthcare providers, and hosting hospice-related educational events for the public. The training will be presented in modules and will be taught by a current or retired experienced hospice nurse and an assistant. The program will allow participants to learn about hospice and to take the training back to their facility to train others. Hospice documentaries will be presented to the healthcare field as well as to the public.

The End of Life Coalition has requested to join Friends of Hospice SW Washington (FOH) and will be taking over the bulk of our educational mission. Their existing organization will become part of our 501(c)(3) through their members paying to become members of FOH and will benefit from our fundraising as well. We see the addition of this group of professionals as enhancing our mission of bringing awareness through education to community members about hospice care. Additionally, we will be training a group of our current members to speak at local community venues about hospice care.

The End of Life Coalition has asked our Board of Directors to be included under our 501(c)(3) umbrella and has been approved. Additionally, we have a chairperson for our speaker's group and several volunteers who have asked to be trained. The Board sees these two facts as excellent progress towards our educational goals.
