Diagnosis

“Your child has cancer” are no words a parent expects to hear. It takes only a minute for a family to register with Connor’s Heroes and realize that they are not alone. There is a community who can help. Registration is open to families with a child who is diagnosed, treated or lives in Central Virginia. Soon after doctors diagnosis a child, a family receives a Connor’s Heroes Bag and Backpack. It is filled with items that childhood cancer parents recommended for the hospital. Inside are gift cards, crafts, stuffed animals, and, best of all, an iPad! To receive more support from Connor’s Heroes, you enroll online or complete the form in your Heroes Bag. Our Program Director will follow up on how we can best assist your family.

Connor’s Heroes developed programs with guidance from parents whose children were treated for cancer. When family registers with Connor's Heroes, our Program Director talks with them about their situation, assessing their financial and emotional needs. We offer assistance during a child’s lengthy treatment.
• Unique Needs fund offering financial assistance for extenuating circumstances such as extended stays in the hospital or Bone Marrow Transplant Unit or when traveling outside of Central Virginia for second opinions, clinical trials or treatment.
• Gift cards for gas, groceries, and restaurants.
• Decorating your child’s hospital room when they are admitted to the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit.
• Heroes Art Sessions with local artists.
• Clinic crafts, coffee and lunch to make your time in clinic more enjoyable.

Pediatric cancer is the #1 disease killer of children yet it is severely underfunded. We started the Connor’s Heroes Pediatric Cancer Research Fund in 2007. We worked with the VCU Massey Cancer Center, Children’s Hospital Foundation and Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU to establish The Connor’s Heroes Pediatric Cancer Research Fund. It is the only endowed research fund in Richmond for pediatric cancer.

Spring 2023, Connor’s Heroes will open five rooms in the new Wonder Tower at Children’s Hospital of Richmond (CHoR) at VCU. Childhood cancer families will have the state-of-the-art inpatient children’s hospital they dreamed of. Connor’s Heroes Program Team, hospital care teams, and researchers will have the rooms they need to care for childhood cancer patients and families.

• Our staff will host special events, or help a parent register their child with Connor’s Heroes in the family lounge.
• When a child is admitted for a bone marrow transplant, the family will have a special, safe space to play and heal. Hospital staff will prepare transplant supplies in a lab on the unit.
• Nurses and healthcare support teams will have rooms to get away or have a private conversation with a parent.
• In The Jamie Hess Bone Marrow Transplant Lab, staff will prepare transplant supplies without having to leave the unit. This will maximize efficiency and quality of a child’s bone marrow transplant.
