Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
San Diego VeloYouth
San Diego VeloYouth (SDVY) is an after-school cycling program designed to empower at-risk and disadvantaged youth. SDVY provides youth with the opportunity to earn a bike through participating in a 6-week cycling class, giving back through community service, paying it forward through fund raising and participating in a race. The program motto is "STARs Create Possibilities" where Self-respect, Teamwork, Achievement and Responsibility are the keys to success. The program is held at the San Diego Velodrome in Balboa Park. SDVY works with middle schools where at least 75% of the student population participates in the free or reduced-price lunch program. These are students who are homeless, living in shelters and/or areas of high gang activity.
SDVY Mentor Corps
SDVY Mentor Corps is a selection-based program to participate in a leadership role in San Diego VeloYouth. Mentors may be adults or teens. Adult Mentors do not need cycling experience, more important is a positive attitude, a desire to work with at-risk kids and the ability to commit to the time of the program. Teen Mentors are SDVY graduates with a desire to support their peers in success. The Mentor Corps is a critical component of the success of SDVY.
