Tree Tops Animal Rescue
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Cat overpopulation is a serious problem nationwide, with astronomically high shelter cat euthanasia rates, especially during the summer kitten season. In one of the shelters we started to work with, their cat euthanasia rate was over 90% annually, but in the 10 years since, thanks to rescues like ours, that rate has dropped in half. But that still leaves too many adoptable cats ending their lives in shelters because there is no place for them to go. By changing our rescue focus to cats only and opening the Treetops Kitty Cafe, we can take in more cats from high kill shelters and provide a comfortable place for the cats to live and for people to visit and get to know them, increasing the number adopted and helping reduce the euthanasia rates even more.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Treetops Kitty Cafe and Foster Program
Primarily we rescue cats from kill shelters and most live at the Kitty Cafe until they find homes. Those who are sick, too young, or not social enough to be at the Kitty Cafe are fostered in the homes of volunteers. In addition, we offer courtesy postings to help owners re-home their pets rather than take them to a shelter, or assist them with the problems they are having with their pet. We help people find appropriate pets by advising them, and referring them to other rescues, trainers, etc. And we provide opportunities for community members to volunteer to help out at the Cafe or a place for them to visit and enjoy the benefits of being around cats for those unable to own them.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
1. Increase the number of cats rescued and adopted
2. Engage the community by providing a place where people can hang out and enjoy the company of cats, take part in activities & events, volunteer, etc.
3. Provide information on cat care, cat behavior, cat overpopulation, and animal rescue.
4. Develop a steady stream of income to cover more than the cost of caring for the cats and the operating costs of the Kitty Café by building up Café revenue, increasing organized fundraising efforts, and applying for available grants.
5. Collect donations for feral cat caretakers and local groups Henry’s Cupboard and Henry’s Helping Paws which provide pet supplies for local residents in financial difficulties or those housebound who depend on Meals for Wheels.
6. Support a fund to pay for vetting for more strays or cats whose owners cannot afford their care to help them find or keep homes and prevent them from reproducing or falling ill.
7. Offer educational programs by giving or hosting talks on animal care, animal rescue, factory breeding, need for spay/neuter and vaccination, etc
8. Start a “Seniors for Seniors” program which places adult cats with seniors and provides assistance to help them keep and care for the cat.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
• Keep up to date information on websites and social media
Periodic review of sales to determine best choice of products to offer
• Offer a calendar offering well attended regular and special events monthly
• Organize fundraising efforts utilizing social media and personal outreach
• Develop a Grant data base to apply for grants
• Work on marketing and public relations though local media, local officials, and community contacts
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Treetops has been survived as a non-profit animal rescue successfully since 2006, adopting out over 00 pets and never operating at a deficit, which indicates the capability and dedication of the founding members. Since opening the Treetops Kitty Cafe 2006we have been well received and supported by the local community which wants it to succeed. Since 2018, we have improved our administrative operations through hiring a full-time manger, an accounting firm, and utilizing Quickbooks. We have increased our Board to help expand our ability to use the skills and contacts of Board members to increase our fundraising and public relation efforts.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since it's founding, Treetops has adopted out more than 2000 pets, mostly dogs, and cats. Since opening Treetops Kitty Cafe:
• The number of cats adopted each month has more than doubled.
• An experienced full time manager and an accounting firm has been hired to help with administrative organization
• Very positive reception by local residents, organizations, businesses, and politicians
• Visitors coming from a 2 hour radius
• Held a number of successful fundraisers
• Holding multiple special events every month
• Favorable press coverage and social media
• Large number of volunteers, donating items, time, and service to the Kitty Cafe
• Collected and donated pet food and supplies for feral cat caretakers, and/or Henry's Helping Paw each year
• Collected an donated pet food and supplies to partnering shelters
We are working on:
Developing a marketing strategy as a pet boutique to appeal to visitors and increase sales, possibly adding online or mail order sales.
Applying for more grants and improving our grant application process
Expanding the number of special events offered and identifying which kinds are most popular
Increasing use of social media and online and local fundraisers and identifying the approaches that are most successful
