What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The presence of chronic stressors such as poverty, unemployment or underemployment, limited resources, substandard housing and high crime rates create a “neighborhood disadvantage” that affects a child’s ability to adjust. This type of chronic environmental stress disproportionately affects members of ethnic minority groups, because they are overrepresented in urban communities. [Beth K. Attar, Nancy G. Guerra and Patrick H. Tolan, “Neighborhood Disadvantage, Stressful Life Events and Adjustment in Urba Adolescents who have lived in poverty for four years are approximately 75% less likely to graduate from high school than non-poor adolescents. [Greg J. Duncan and Jeanne Brooks-Gunn, eds. Consequences of Growing Up Poor. New York: Russell Sage Foundation, 1997, pp. 388-399.] Less than 4% of children from the lowest income families graduate from college. [Lavelle, Robert, ed. America’s New War on Poverty. San Francisco: Blackside, Inc., 1995, p. 69.]

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Tulsa After School Programs and Services

World Baseball Outreach Programs and Services will help provide the opportunity to the under served youth and their families in Tulsa to enrich their lives and pursue education through a rigorous program of athletic training, health and nutrition, academic support, and social empowerment. The program combines responsibilities in the classroom, athletics, and social/community interaction projects to assist young participants in developing life skills and character assets that will create meaningful and measurable changes in their immediate and future lives. The program also strives to create strong families and active community involvement. WBO addresses the needs of low income and single parent families.
Academics and life skill education is our main focus. It’s not about baseball & softball. WBO will help guide a young athlete on a life path that balances the mind and the body and spirit. WBO will show that opportunities can exist for all athletes, regardless of their economic or social situation if they perform responsibly in school working to score the best grades possible. WBO provides the best guidance, mentoring, tutoring, and the additional education instruction to show our youth how a dream of being an elite athlete can lead into a higher education.

Population(s) Served

A project has been started by World Baseball Outreach and have partnered with Major League Baseball's R.B.I. (Reviving Baseball in Inner cities) to create an opportunity for children in the Tulsa community to play baseball and softball. The partnership has grown from WBO and R.B.I. to adding several partners in the education and mentoring fields.

The league will be called and governed by R.B.I. rules and regulations. This will open the door to future funding opportunities from R.B.I. in areas of uniform and equipment acquisition, capital improvement projects, training and education clinics and resources, and help with volunteer & player recruitment and retention.

Funding for this project will be used for the following:

Education/Homework Help

 Ø      Flyers/Forms/Printing

Ø      Website Design and Operation

Ø      Volunteer/Player/Coaches/Umpire/Scorekeeper Training

Ø      Uniform & Equipment Acquisition

Ø      Field Maintenance

Population(s) Served

World Baseball Outreach supports baseball/softball academies in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Coro, Venezuela and Maracannau, Brazil, and several communities in Nicaragua and Cuba. WBO supports them financially, with equipment donations, and various other needs such as food, shoes, arts & crafts supplies, and tooth paste/brushes. Equipment donations are made around the world using business travelers, churches, businesses already shipping containers, and various shipping companies offering discounted shipping.

WBO goes on mission trips each year. Some are specifically for WBO teams that are put together to not only play and put on clinics, but to also witness to children in the areas we travel. WBO also can act as a guide to get other teams or groups to places like Dominican Republic, Haiti, Venezuela, and Brazil. Below is a list of the 2011 mission trips.

Goals & Strategy

Learn about the organization's key goals, strategies, capabilities, and progress.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Goals for 2019
Establish strong internal controls in finance and accounting practices
Establish Strong Relationship with area schools for better accountability of the student athlete
Hire Grant Writer
Establish Fundraising Team
Grow LifeChurch.TV relationship to increase volunteerism
Reach 1000 youth and their families through Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities Program and after school programs

Grow the WBO team by marketing the mission of the ministry. Establish partnerships with local churches and businesses to fill current job descriptions list to enable WBO to run effectively and efficiently in 2019.

Reaching our goals and using our planned strategy will allow us to be more effective in reaching and actually changing lives in our community. We have a solid base of volunteers and employees to take our mission to the next level of responsibility and empowerment.

Tracking student athlete successes and failures in the classroom is a challenge but as we partner with more organizations and with public and private schools and our volunteerism increases we will be able to give instant feedback to the student.
