What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

YouthTalk: A Bridges of Understanding and Global Nomads Group Initiative

In partnership with the Global Nomads Group, Bridges has created the "Youth Talk" program for videoconferences, dialogue, and discussions between American and Arab high school students.  This program harnesses the power of digital technology through a unique, interactive platform to engage young people with their peers across the world in an open dialogue about issues that affect both cultures, learning from each other and forming lasting bonds of friendship and mutual respect.

"Youth Talk" was piloted in 2008 by two American high schools and two high schools in Jordan.  This was a huge success, leading to the program’s expansion during the current year to include twelve partnerships including schools from across both the United States and the Arab world.  The curriculum addresses many issues in government, politics, religion, and culture; throughout the school year, our goal is to use these monthly "meetings" to help expand students' knowledge, broaden their perspective, and develop understanding and friendships.  Across the board, students and teachers alike comment that the program has greatly enhanced their learning and perspectives, with one teacher noting that "nothing [he had] ever come up with excited them this much."

Population(s) Served

Our annual Journeys to the Arab world have exposed three different groups of Americans to Arab history, culture, language, religion, and life. We have visited Jordan and the UAE, and are planning our next journey for spring 2012. Experiences include visits to local schools, meetings with leading financial companies, exposure to refugee camps, royal audiences, cultural tours, and, most importantly, the opportunity to speak with people face-to-face.

Bridges also supports existing programs and initiatives that further our mission of fostering better understanding between the United States and the Arab world. These initiatives tend to focus on, but are not exclusive to, endeavors involving children and youth. They include:

· The Women2Women Conference, uniting young women from across the U.S. and the Arab and Muslim worlds.

· Queen Rania’s Madrasati Initiative, which works to rebuild poor schools throughout Jordan.

· Middle East Science Fund, which fosters international collaboration throughout the Middle East and the world.

· Al-Mubadarah: The Arab Empowerment Initiative’s Washington, DC launch event.

· World Digital Library’s Arabic texts and literature database.

· Sport 4 Peace’s “Iraq to America” program, which brought young Iraqi girls to the United States.

· Boston Children’s Chorus Trip to Jordan.

· “Youth Initiative for Progress in Iraq” conference for American and Iraqi students.

· “Heal the Rift” Rally to address the concerning divide between East and West.
