Mission

The Whittemore Peterson Institute fills a critical need for expert medical care and increased knowledge of post-acute infectious diseases. We advance our mission through "The Gift of Health" for patients and a medical grant to the onsite medical practice. By creating and disseminating educational materials, WPI brings greater disease awareness to the medical and patient communities.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our primary goals are:
create scientific and medical collaborations for better use of time and resources and to ensure faster results;
educate and train students in the science of neuro-immunological diseases; and
communicate scientific knowledge of the causes, effective treatments, and prevention.

We will achieve our goals through:
development of scientific and medical tools and talent through active engagement with research and medical personnel;
receipt of private, business, state, and federal support to maintain and grow WPI's capabilities; and
strategic management and optimal use of our resources and personnel.

Our capabilities for meeting our goals include:
knowledge of the diseases we study;
experienced doctors and researchers;
existing funding; and
vast network of skilled collaborators.

In September 2018, WPI achieved a critical milestone when the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents approved a new contract resulting in the integration of WPI’s basic research program and its associated research assets into the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine’s expert research community. This major move will provide greater visibility for ME/CFS research as it becomes an integral part of the University’s research efforts.

All other key activities including patient outreach, community education, and advocacy will continue through our organization. In addition, WPI will continue to provide grant support in the form of equipment and office space so that private medical practices can continue to serve patients impacted by ME/CFS and similar diseases in Reno, NV.
