Notes from the nonprofit

APPLE ARTS-NYC was founded in 2007 in response to a lack of arts programming for homeless children in New York City. Building on a program that began at Art Start – a nonprofit arts organization similar in mission — APPLE ARTS sustained youth programs in a lower east side shelter. Soon after, APPLE ARTS’ core program became a mainstay in the shelters it served through weekly afterschool arts-rich experiences in an educational atmosphere of creative arts making.

After eight years of service, Apple Arts-NYC returned “home” to Art Start effective May 16, 2015 in a merger between the two organizations.

“Apple Arts was born at Art Start and returning to its origins will enable both organizations to work together on behalf of New York City communities who need us most,” said Margot Liebman who has played multiple roles including program director at Art Start, executive director of Apple Arts, and now board member. “Joining forces makes a lot of sense and I’m excited by the potential of the partnership,” she said. Margot is one of two board members transitioning to Art Start.

Gavin Blair, president of Apple Arts, has also joined the board of Art Start, which “nurtures marginalized youth through creative workshops at homeless shelters, alternative incarceration programs, and partnering youth agencies,” said Gavin. “We’re stronger together and I am looking forward to serving the children of the city with such a well respected organization.”

Art Start is committed to sustaining Apple Arts programming. Johanna De Los Santos, Co-Executive Director of Art Start, said “The merger of Apple Arts and Art Start brings tremendous potential to sustain our creative arts workshops in multiple shelters across the city for years to come. We’re beyond excited to welcome Danny, Margot and Gavin back to the Art Start family where, together, we will engage an even broader community of homeless families, teaching artists and supporters.”

We look forward to sustaining arts programming for children experiencing homeless with your continued support.

All the best,
The Apple Arts | Art Start Team

After-School Arts Workshops

Apple Arts NYC are a series of free year-round after-school art-based workshops offered to under-served children living in New York City.  Our programs follow the academic calendar on weekday evenings, with occasional weekend field trips throughout the year.  Summer programming is reserved for special classes and short-term workshops.  Projects are all art-based, ranging in discipline from visual to performing arts and other creative mediums. All of our programs take place inside of the homeless shelters where the children live, or in the community centers in their neighborhoods.
