What we aim to solve
Cruelty to animals is something that is typically hidden from view. Nowhere is this more evident than with farm animals and slaughter-bound horses. Though it is difficult to imagine how much worse it could be for these poor animals, without pictures and documentation to tell the animals' tales, they would undoubtedly suffer even more at the hands of such people. The more we bring these atrocities to light and out into the open the less the violators can hide.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our investigators will continue to document the atrocities of the horse slaughter pipeline, conduct investigations into the conditions that farm animals face during long distance transport, and maintain a presence at auctions and feedlots nationwide to expose abuse and hold offenders accountable.
We will continue our European Union Consumer Awareness Campaign against horse slaughter. The EU ban of horse meat from Mexico already has spared tens of thousands of U.S. horses each year from slaughter, and we will be working to obtain a similar ban for Canadian horse meat. Simultaneously, we will continue to push for the passage of the "SAFE ACT", which would prohibit the slaughter of horses in the US as well as the export of US horses for slaughter.
We will begin our calf program. Our investigators will document the atrocities of the calf slaughter pipeline, by conducting investigations into the conditions that calves face during long distance transport.
Additionally, we are producing several compelling films to educate the public about the plight of horses and farm animals.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our strategies to meet our goals are as follows:
Maintain a tight schedule of investigations to ensure our teams can be present at auctions, feedlots, export facilities and slaughter plants across the United States, Canada and Mexico to document and report abuse.
Provide police training courses to those departments that are most likely to respond to an animal complaint.
Conduct investigations into the US/Canadian horse slaughter industry and use the results to convince the European lawmakers and authorities to ban horse meat imported from Canada. Continue awareness campaign in Europe to reduce the demand for horse meat.
Continue to produce animal handling manuals for auction and feedlot employees that provide training for the proper handling of animals at auctions and feedlots.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our investigators possess a unique set of skills which allows them to document and secure evidence effectively. Our team consists of attorneys, former military specialists as well as certified humane officers. Animals' Angels is known for factual, hard hitting documentation that can be trusted. Federal, state and local agencies and law enforcement have conducted and fined animal abusers based upon our investigations.
Our training programs and manuals are developed in conjunction with attorneys, law enforcement and veterinarians.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In 2021 we conducted 162 investigations across the U.S. The evidence and footage obtained from our investigations have been used in a variety of news articles in the U.S. and abroad, as well as several documentaries and PSAs. Additionally, our evidence was used by the USDA to investigate and fine one of the biggest horse kill buyers in the U.S. Our investigations continue to shine a light on the cruelty that farm animals face at auction, in transport, and at slaughter houses.
In 2020 we conducted 100 investigations across the U.S. This lower amount of investigations was a direct result of the worldwide pandemic due to Covid-19 and associated travel restrictions. However, our investigations did bring to light that European dog food manufacturers were utilizing horse meat processed in Mexico. Because of this investigation one manufacturer immediately ceased procuring horse meat from the Mexican plant and a second manufacturer has begun its one internal investigation.
In 2019, we conducted 159 investigations across the U.S. and abroad. The evidence and footage obtained from our investigations have been used in a variety of news articles in the U.S. and abroad, as well as several documentaries and PSAs. Our investigations continue to shine a light on the cruelty that farm animals face at auction, in transport, and at slaughter houses.
In 2015, the evidence from our horse slaughter investigations convinced the European Union to place a ban against Mexican horse meat. Initially saving almost 34,000 US horses from a gruesome death across the border, this ban continues to result in tens of thousands of horses being spared from the slaughter trade each year. In 2019, we conducted several investigations into the US/Canada horse meat trade and with the help of our partners in the EU, we will urge the EU decision makers to place a similar ban on Canadian horse meat. By decreasing the demand for horse meat, we protect our horses from the threat of slaughter.

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
