Clean-ups and Tree Plantings along the Bayou

Each year Greens Bayou Coalition plans Bayou Clean-Ups/Tree Plantings along the bayou. A clean bayou is a huge step towards improving the quality of life in the watershed. Tree Plantings serve the watershed in countless ways. Trees not only add shade and beauty along bayou trails and parks, but clean the air and filter water before it enters the bayou and slow the flow of floodwaters from our regular Houston storms. The locations for cleanups and tree plantings come from different places. They may be suggested by Harris County Flood Control District, arise from a member of one of the Reach Committees, or come from a management district who needs trees replaced in a particular park. The trees are donated by Trees for Houston, Wilderness Houston and CenterPoint Energy. Our volunteers are groups from corporations, high school clubs, conservation groups and individuals--hundreds each year.

Kayaking for Kids is a program The Coalition manages from Thomas Bell Foster Park in our south reach, near Interstate 10 and Normandy. The 6 acre park is owned by Houston Parks Board and developed by The Coalition to provide access for paddlers to Greens Bayou. Kayaking for Kids hosts students and youth from nearby schools and youth groups. An outfitter is engaged to teach kayaking skills and guide the students on a paddling trip upstream to Strickland Park and back to Foster Park. We partner with local naturalists to provide education about the land-water connection and the plants and animals that are at home along the bayou. Program budget is annual.

Greens Bayou Coalition works with multiple stakeholders, including Harris County Flood Control District, county precincts, utility districts, nonprofits, other governmental districts, corporations and individuals who are interested in adding trails and green spaces in the watershed. We are able to bring these groups to the table to meet, help them find common ground to collaborate and leverage resources to improve the quality of life for the community.

The Texas Stream Team is a network of trained volunteers and supportive partners working to monitor and promote stewardship of Texas waterways and ensure information is available to the public. The collected information can be used to make environmentally sound decisions.

Clean water certainly falls within the Greens Bayou Coalition mission of improving the quality of life in the Watershed. A very real way to participate is to monitor water quality at sites along the bayou. Greens Bayou Coalition is beginning a partnership with local community colleges to train Environmental Science students in monitoring procedures. They will get important job training, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality gets eyes on Greens Bayou water quality.
