What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Every second of every day, there are thousands of children and teens among us who are caught up in a cycle of trauma and drama; victims of risk factors such as poverty, high-crime neighborhoods, and exposure to drug and alcohol abuse. Victims of physical, sexual, emotional abuse, and/or neglect. Not to mention bearing witness to domestic violence, parental incarceration, or caretaker mental illness. These traumatized young people are more likely to disengage at home and school, turning inward -- oftentimes resulting in deviant and self-destructive behavior, delinquency, drug and alcohol abuse, gang violence, depression, and low self-worth.

In fact, up to 70% of all youth in the juvenile justice system have a trauma-related mental health disorder .

The burden of child maltreatment and child trauma in the United States found the total lifetime estimated financial costs associated in just one year is approximately $124 billion . This figure doesn't include prevention and intervention.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

St. Clair Butterfly Foundation engages children and teens in at-risk communities to effectively mitigate risk factors i.e. low SES, high crime neighborhood, domestic violence, etc. which have been proven to contribute to delinquency, drug and alcohol abuse, gang violence, depression, and low self-worth in adolescence. Through evidence-based intervention programs grounded in the creative arts, SCBF offers life-skill development, mentoring and personal growth opportunities, because we believe every child and adolescent deserves the chance to reach their potential.

To achieve our goal, we:

A. Recruit individual donors to support classroom projects, using web search tools, email marketing, social and traditional media outreach, and yearly outreach campaigns.

B. Partner with corporations and foundations to fund projects on a large scale, match citizen donations, and raise awareness about SCBF.org and education inequity.

C. Collaborate with entrepreneurs to introduce teachers to novel classroom resources and methodology.

The assets we use to implement our strategies include:

- Our website: All transactions with donors/partners take place through our website, www.SCBF.org.

- Our products: We've created tools that make it easy for partners/donors to engage with their communities. These products include matching offers, flash fundings, gift cards, and giving pages.

- Our marketing plan: We use email/digital marketing, personal outreach, and social media to raise awareness/engage donors.

- Our thank you packages/reporting: Once a project is funded, teachers share thank yous, photos, and reports with every donor who gave to their projects, describing how each donation has improved their classrooms. Donors who give more than $50 can opt to receive student-written thank you notes.

- Our staff: Our team of dedicated volunteers is organized and focused on each of our capabilities, including Marketing & Partnerships, Product & Engineering, People Operations, Finance, and Operations.

We have achieved one pillar of our long-term fundraising goal, and are making strong progress towards the others. For the 2016-2017 school year:
- $28,000 was allocated to programs
- 92% of all expenses were program-related in high-poverty schools in the U.S.
