What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Every night, more than 2,000 individuals in Essex County have no place to return home, living instead on the street, under highway overpasses, at public libraries, or in public spaces like Newark's Penn Station. Recent data shows 24% of the entire state's homeless population resides in Essex County, making it the number one county in New Jersey suffering from homelessness (Hudson County is next at 9.6%). For most of these individuals, homelessness did not result from a single cause; rather, a complex interplay of structural and individual factors led to their current circumstances. According to the most recent survey of Essex County's chronically homeless population, 57% suffer from a mental health issue, 50% suffer from a chronic health condition, 45% suffer from substance abuse, 31% have a physical disability, 13% have a development disability, 12% have HIV/AIDS, and 10% are victims of domestic violence.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Compassionate Care

At Goodwill Rescue Mission, we are in an exciting new season where we have the unique opportunity to redevelop the Mission’s campus on University Avenue. Over the next 2-3 years, we will work with a real estate developer to replace Goodwill Rescue Mission’s current buildings (which are old and difficult to maintain) with a newly constructed space, purpose-built to serve the critical needs of men, women and families in Newark. This new space would allow us to offer radical hospitality for guests with meals and Day Center activities during the day, as well as residential care overnight. This means that the Mission will temporarily suspend direct services and plans to reopen with brand new spaces and programs that will meet the immediate needs of each person coming to us for help.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Goodwill Rescue Mission will be the most effective provider of compassionate care and comprehensive life transformation services to the poor, homeless, and addicted of Newark, enabling the hurting and lost to dare to hope that they can be fully restored in the dignity of their humanity as they embrace a lifestyle committed to being a productive member of their community. We aim to build trust by establishing name-knowing relationships with our guests, inviting them to choose help and transform their lives. In 2017, Goodwill Rescue Mission (Newark) and New York City Rescue Mission joined forces with The Bowery Mission. Leveraging more than 400 years of combined service, three historic organizations became one to reimagine the fight against poverty and homelessness.

In order to effectively combat the epidemic of homelessness affecting nearly 70,000 people in New York City and to meet the needs of our neighbors across the New York metro area, Goodwill Rescue Mission (Newark) and New York City Rescue Mission joined forces with The Bowery Mission. Leveraging more than 400 years of combined service, three historic organizations became one to reimagine the fight against poverty and homelessness.

Today, our combined organization employs 155 full-time staff, is led by a 3-member board of directors, and is supported by more than 17,000 volunteers per year. Goodwill Rescue Mission continues to maintain a separate board under the umbrella governance of The Bowery Mission's board. Leaders from Goodwill Rescue Mission are integrated into all levels of our now integrated programs and teams.

Since 1896, Goodwill Rescue Mission has drawn on our experience working with people experiencing homelessness and poverty to inform our programs. Each year, in collaboration with The Bowery Mission and New York City Rescue Mission, we provide: 558,000 hot meals, 140,000 nights of safe shelter, 100,000 articles of clothing and 2,400 onsite medical and optometry exams.
