Rescue and reduce are key principles in our work of finding animals good, appropriate, forever homes; preventing warehousing and/or euthanizing adoptable animals; changing public consciousness about the value of animals and our responsibilities to them; helping address the puppy mills issue; and promoting spay/neuter.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
PAWS (Pound Animal Welfare Society of Montclair, Inc.) is a non-profit, 501(c)3 charitable organization dedicated to the humane treatment of animals and finding homes for stray and abandoned cats and dogs in our community. Our main goal is to match you and your family with the right feline or canine companion.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
In our 45+ years of service to the community, PAWS has developed much expertise and a wonderful network of caring people, enabling us to be a highly responsive and flexible animal rescue group.
Our sanctuaries, along with our strong fostering network, enable us to continue sheltering a limited number of animals in need, often “bully breed” dogs. At any given time, we typically care for about 10 dogs and up to 100 cats and kittens. We provide critical services to the local north Jersey communities, and also assist overcrowded shelters throughout NJ. PAWS connects people and animals
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our sanctuaries, along with our strong fostering network, enable us to continue sheltering a limited number of animals in need, often “bully breed” dogs. At any given time, we typically care for about 10 dogs and up to 100 cats and kittens. We provide critical services to the local north Jersey communities, and also assist overcrowded shelters throughout NJ. PAWS connects people and animals.
We currently maintain two small sanctuaries – one for dogs and one for cats – which, along with our strong fostering network, enable us to continue sheltering a limited number of animals in need. We also provide community outreach at the Petco Adoption Centers in Verona, NJ and Orange, NJ. Our cats and dogs are spayed or neutered, administered vaccinations, provided routine and emergency veterinary care, and all are treated with compassion.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Our volunteer fundraisers have now implemented online fundraisers to allow for contactless events to benefit the animals in our care.
Despite having to vacate from the North Willow Street facility in December 2008, PAWS has continued to operate, providing critical services to Montclair and the surrounding communities. Our long term goal is to be able to resume operating a centrally located facility, so that we can shelter more animals and facilitate adoptions with greater ease.
