Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Conferences, symposia, and related activities
International Sculpture Center’s Conferences were born of a workshop hosted by Elden Tefft in 1960. True to our roots, the ISC hosts the conference annually bringing together the community in different locations throughout the world. Anyone with an investment in sculpture gathers to create the space for dialogue among unique perspectives about the current state and future of sculpture. The curated programming addresses relevance, engagement, diversity, inclusion, and synergy. ISC partners with groups and local organizations to provide accompanying events that showcase the community of the conferences’ location.
In 2021, ISC launched Voices on Community through Time & Space, a series of virtual encounters designed to inspire, inform, and focalize communities. Through this program the ISC reaches new audiences and increases collaboration around the globe. It prioritizes convenience and accessibility for all through panels, keynotes, networking, hands-on workshops, and opportunities.
Publications
Sculpture magazine, published 6 times a year, is the only journal devoted to the evolving landscape of contemporary sculptural art. Featuring traditional media, installation, and new technologies, articles, interviews, and reviews cover a broad range of ideas and practices, including respected and emerging artists, and recognized and new critical voices.
Sculpture is available in both print and digital editions, while the magazine’s website, sculpturemagazine.art, also presents videos, artist projects, and additional online-exclusive content.
ISC Press publishes a complementary series of books on contemporary sculpture, including A Sculpture Reader: Contemporary Art Since 1980, Conversations on Sculpture, Landscapes for Art, The New Earthwork: Art, Action, Agency, and Artists Reclaim the Commons: New Works/New Territories/New Publics. Like the magazine, these books serve as tools for artists, educators, students, and anyone with an interest in contemporary sculpture.
ISC Award Programs
ISC Awards provide a setting for the community to collectively honor those who have shown excellence in their field, and advance sculpture as a whole.
ISC’s current award programs include: The Outstanding Educator Award to honor inspiring, influential artists who have taught sculpture at institutions of higher learning and have sustained exemplary careers as professional artists; The Patron Award to recognize individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the advancement of sculpture; The Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award for undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate excellence in the field; The Innovator Award was established in 2021 to recognize the creative innovation of individuals, organizations, or collectives who develop new ideas and work to improve and/or expand contemporary sculpture. In 2022, the ISC will introduce the Critic Award to identify, encourage, and support new writers to energize the field of art criticism.
Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award and Traveling Exhibition
ISC’s Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award has recognized 300+ students who have shown excellence in the field. Each year, faculty sponsors at educational institutions around the world nominate hundreds of students. Juried by art professionals, recipients are awarded with a feature in Sculpture magazine and the opportunity to participate in an exhibition and residency. The program provides practical skills pertinent to the professional art world, including competing for grants or public art commissions, and presenting their work to other professionals. It has been substantiated as a major program for the advancement of young careers both by the participating institutions and the success of the recipients themselves. Since the program was founded, students have experienced great professional accomplishments including public commissions, professional museum appointments, and teaching positions at major universities.
ISC & Sculpture Magazine's Websites
Sculpture.org is an expansive platform including opportunities for professional and personal development, networking with like-minded individuals through dialogue, and engaging programs accessible to all. Connecting sculpture enthusiasts within the community and beyond, it serves as an inclusive place for anyone with an interest in and commitment to the field. It allows the ISC to expand our audience and connectivity by welcoming entryways as an introduction to our organization, our benefits, and our programs. These engaging pathways ensure our audience’s continued interest in programs and membership; allowing for accessibility to all, with a goal to build lasting relationships.
Sculpturemagazine.art is the essential source of information and dialogue on all forms of sculpture internationally. You can find not-to-be missed coverage of contemporary sculptural art – from features, interviews, reviews, and art criticism, to thought-provoking essays, exclusive videos, projects, and more.
International Sculpture Day
Developed in 2014 and implemented in 2015, International Sculpture Day (or ISDay), is an annual celebration to champion sculpture worldwide. One of ISC’s most celebrated events, ISDAY has garnered more than 42 million impressions and reached over 20 million people online. This free event is open to all who are interested in sculpture. Participants may host an array of virtual and in-person events, such as open studios tours, demonstrations, workshops, panels, sculpture exhibits and more. ISDay encourages participation and connects members and artists nationally and internationally.
Residencies
The ISC established residency programs as a way to expand on programming and provide emerging sculptors with an additional opportunity to work with fellow artists in a studio environment. The International Sculpture Center (ISC) currently supports artists with four residency programs: art-st-urban, Switzerland; Grounds For Sculpture, Hamilton, NJ; Josephine Sculpture Park, Frankfort, KY; and Mana Contemporary, Jersey City, NJ. The ISC is thrilled about its ever-growing residency programs.
Outstanding Educator Award
The Outstanding Educator Award is given annually by the International Sculpture Center to honor inspiring, influential artists who have taught sculpture at institutions of higher learning and have sustained exemplary careers as professional artists. Recipients are valued by students and colleagues as mentors for future generations, are recognized nationally and internationally for their significant artistic production, and have made significant contributions to the field.
Lifetime Achievement Award
“Legacy means something. This award means something. It is important to me and I am honored to receive it.” –James Surls upon receiving the 2020 ISC Lifetime Achievement Award. The ISC's Board of Trustees established the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991 to recognize individual sculptors who have made exemplary contributions to the field of sculpture, are masters of sculptural processes and techniques, and with a generosity of spirit have devoted their lives to the advancement of the sculpture field as a whole. To honor the past and preserve their legacy, recipients are featured in Sculpture and honored at a fundraising event to celebrate the remarkable life of the sculptor surrounded by family, friends, and supporters. The legendary artists who receive the Lifetime Achievement Award stand as monuments in the field and pave the way through their work, teaching, and advocacy for the next generation of sculptors.
Innovator Award
The ISC Innovator Award was established in 2021 to recognize the creative innovation of individuals, organizations, or collectives who develop new ideas and work to improve and/or expand the field of contemporary sculpture. The recipient of this award demonstrates a commitment to their community and effects social change through their work. The intention of the program is to bring worldwide attention to those that foster relationships and social change through their work and encourages other artists to explore their ability for collaboration, advocacy, and change. The inaugural recipient was Asim Waqif of New Delhi, India.
