What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Incubation & Action Grant program
NJCH funds nonprofit organizations to develop meaningful humanities projects for New Jersey audiences. We welcome applications from libraries, museums, educational institutions, social service organizations, historical societies, cultural organizations, and other community organizations. Larger organizations, such as colleges and universities, will need to demonstrate meaningful public engagement beyond the confines of the institution to have a competitive proposal.
Our grant program includes:
Incubation grants up to $5,000 (given two times per year) to experiment, plan, research, prototype, and examine new programs and topics.
Action grants up to $20,000 (given once per year) to implement or expand programs.
Community History
Community History participants work closely with their communities to learn about and share their untold stories. Participants receive instruction on public history practices, develop projects in a collaborative environment, and receive funding from NJCH to launch projects in their communities.

What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Strategic Plan 2022-2025
Overarching Goals
1. Strengthen NJCH's role as a convener.
Foster collaboration and resource sharing among humanities organizations to strengthen and advance common goals.
2. Expand and diversify the humanities.
Expand access and participation in humanities organizations and create more diverse organizations and leadership.
3. Advocate for the advancement of the humanities.
Be the state's leading voice for raising public awareness and understanding of the humanities and build capacity for humanities organizations across the state.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our vision is a New Jersey that delights in diversity, appreciates that there are no easy answers, and finds joy
and understanding in the humanities. To see this vision through, we develop and implement programming that focuses on the humanities. This programming is always tackled through partnerships with other organizations to strengthen offerings and reach diverse audiences. The NJCH team, along with the Board of Trustees, approaches program development, outreach, and evaluation with a collaborative and evaluation-minded approach.
