What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

1:1 English language tutoring & citizenship preparation to immigrant & refugee adults

VEP, today, is the only organization in the region that is exclusively dedicated to providing free tutoring, free books and support to non-native English speaking adults on a one-to-one basis. The unique and flexible VEP one-to-one instructional model reflects the literature on effective adult learning techniques. Students’ personal learning goals drive the curricula. Typical student goals include learning necessary communication skills to gain employment, learning English to better support their children’s education, and improving everyday essential communications with neighbors, healthcare providers, and co-workers. Further, the instructional model is “student centered” in regard to the time and location of tutoring sessions which are tailored to accommodate the schedules and geographical locations of students. Unlike other volunteer literacy programs, VEP students and tutors sign a commitment to meet three hours a week for a minimum of one year, which helps to ensure the integrity of the program.
