Karen Ann Quinlan Charitable Foundation Inc

Our organization is aiming to ensure the sustainability of the Karen Ann Quinlan Memorial Foundation DBA the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice. We want to be sure that all decisions are made to the benefit of the patient and family without having to take into account whether this care will be fully reimbursed by Medicare or private insurance.
Another goal of our organization is to impact the health of our community in a positive way by offering Bereavement Care to anyone who has suffered a loss by death whether or not they had a loved one in our hospice. Unresolved grief can lead to many negative outcomes including broken families, poor job performance, substance abuse and more. We are particularly concerned about children, the forgotten grievers. The Joseph T. Quinlan Bereavement Center has pioneered, and our organization has underwritten, years of Children's Art Bereavement Classes.
Our main goal is to lead by example. As we offer a reliably high standard of hospice care and constantly raise the bar for bereavement care we hope that this standard becomes the norm among all hospices.

Our key strategy is to maintain and manage an endowment to ensure the sustainability of the Karen Ann Quinlan Memorial Foundation DBA the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice. As new programs are conceived by the Memorial foundation to fill the needs in our community our strategy is to underwrite these programs in order to assure that they are not a financial burden on the Hospice operation. For example the Memorial Foundation recognized a need for a hospice residence for patients who could not receive care in their own homes and to offer respite to caregivers. Our organization spent over two million dollars to assist in the construction and operation of the Karen Ann Quinlan Home for Hospice which opened in November of 2015. By assuming the lion's share of the cost of construction of this 10 bed residential hospice facility our strategy was to lower the cost to the hospice to assure the sustainability of this operation.
Our organization recognized the financial burden of the hospice offering Bereavement Care to anyone who has suffered a loss by death regardless of ability to pay and our strategy was to purchase a permanent home for this effort so the staff would not have to worry about a place to offer this care. In April 2017 our Organization purchased a headquarters for the Bereavement Center operations at #5 Plains Road in Augusta NJ.

In just under twenty years we have built up an endowment roughly equivalent to one year's operational budget of the Karen Ann Quinlan Memorial Foundation DBA the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice. In this way we are able to assure the sustainability of the operation of the Hospice, the Bereavement Center, the Home for Hospice and the Haven Program.
We have over the years become proficient at fundraising in our community from individuals, businesses and foundations. We now raise over three hundred thousand dollars each year to assure the sustainability of the Hospice, Bereavement Center and Home for Hospice. The Charitable Board of Directors is made up of local business leaders who are invested in the hospice mission. Our organization has developed an investment policy with very low risk utilizing professional fund managers overseen by financial professionals on our board.

Because of the growth of our organization's endowment we have been able to withstand the changes in the Health Care Industry and remain independent, sustainable and financially strong. Some years ago Medicare suspended all reimbursements for hospice care for an extended length of time and we were able to support the hospice's operations with no negative impact on care. During the sequester years our organization has been able to ensure the continuing high level of care despite shrinking reimbursements.
Next up is to create an endowment specifically for the Joseph T. Quinlan Bereavement Center Children's Art Bereavement Program. That effort is gearing up now and will require the raising of approximately thirty five thousand dollars.
After that we intend to create an endowment specifically for indigent care at the Karen Ann Quinlan Home for Hospice. This would require approximately an additional million dollars.
