Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
NJ SHARES
Through a contracted statewide network of existing community based agencies, New Jersey SHARES takes applications for energy assistance grants from New Jersey households. In this application process, individuals are given financial assistance with either or both of their electric and natural gas bills. During this process clients are referred to other existing human service resources.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goals are to assist low and moderate income households address their energy burden by providing energy assistance, education and program referrals to conservation, efficiency and weatherization programs. We also advocate for energy assistance for low, moderate and working poor income households served by NJ SHARES programs, the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program and the New Jersey Universal Service programs.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
1) New Jersey SHARES conducts more than 200 outreach events annually to inform various audiences about NJ SHARES’ energy, telephone and water assistance programs.
2) We partner with more than 300 agencies in the non-profit, community action and government segments to reach the public in a meaningful way and provide a holistic solution to their crisis.
3) All the regulated Utility companies provide our program information their customers.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Using our agency network and personal portal, applicants can access any of our programs for energy, telephone and water. This technical capability allows us to serve our clients here in New Jersey as well as offer the United Water Cares assistance program in six additional states.
Our client services call center allows enrollment in Verizon’s Communication Lifeline Program as well as referral services for 10 other programs the household may benefit from.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
NJ SHARES began in 1998 and was able to serve 99 households. As of July 2013, NJ SHARES has served 177,000 households with $70.7 Million in energy assistance.
The NJ SHARES Client Services Call Center was established in 2005 and aids more than 150,000 households annually in enrollment services. In addition, NJ SHARES provides weatherization, conservation and efficiency information with our 300 plus partners around the state.
In our efforts to reach households in our densely populated state, NJ SHARES has grown from working with 50 agencies to more than 300 agency partners.
