TWELVE HILLS NATURE CENTER INC

Established in 2006, Nature Leaders is a program that provides 12+ weekly after-school classes for 20 fifth-grade public school students. Students learn about different aspects of the Blackland Prairie ecosystem and learn to lead nature walks. Hands-on classes are conducted at Twelve Hills Nature Center. After completing classes, fifth-grade Nature Leaders lead 1000 of their fellow students on nature walks over two weeks. They are supported by North Texas Master Naturalists. Talking points are used to guide their presentations. The Nature Leaders demonstrate a love of nature to their fellow students and serve as role models, showing their peers that nature is cool while conveying nature information. This serves as a building block for environmental stewardship and touches all students. Younger students look forward to becoming Nature Leaders when they are in fifth grade. Nature leaders also learn and practice leadership and pubic speaking. The program is presented at no cost to attendees or the school.

Twelve Hills is maintained so that educational organizations can bring their students and teachers can lead their own programs. In 2021 we've has a public elementary school and two private elementary schools participate.

Art programs, especially for children are conducted at Twelve Hills.
