What we aim to solve
The founding of the Zydeco Historical and Preservation Society, Inc. was inspired by The Treasures of Opelousas, a grassroots organization made up of local citizens from Opelousas, Louisiana who were concerned that Zydeco Music and Culture was slowly dying out. In an effort to preserve this unique form of history and cultural expression, The Treasures of Opelousas organized The Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Festival (the first and oldest Zydeco Festival in the World) in 1981. In fact, many members of the Zydeco Historical and Preservation Society, Inc. are the children of the original Treasures of Opelousas and still have strong ties to Zydeco Music and Creole culture. Since the start to the first Zydeco Festival in 1982, Zydeco Music and Culture has grown into one of the most popular form of musical and cultural expression in the world.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Artist advocacy
Zydeco music and Creole culture awareness.
Zydeco music promotion and awareness.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
One strategy that we have started is: purchasing the ZydecoEvents.com website. ZydecoEvents.com is where artists can feature their upcoming music or live performance events. Other non-profit organizations can feature their zydeco related events. ZydecoEvents.com has become a focused website for Zydeco music, artist advocacy and calendar of events for California, Texas, Louisiana and other states.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have been able to sustain our organization with very little overhead, and continue to use our existing volunteers as resources.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have accomplished recognization by the Recording Academy in being an organization that is able to determine what Zydeco music is, and have been asked to attend annual meetings in order to provide guidance regarding authenticity of music entries (specifically Zydeco genre).
We have also created a radio program, the "Zydeco Workout" which we broadcast from Stanford University, and feature zydeco music and tid bits of Creole culture information. This program is later added as a podcast on our website for our listeners to listen during the work week. We have a good pool of listeners.
The next step is for us to re-develop our website to be a little more up to date, and user friendly. This would be the next big step, but very costly; but beneficial for the future of our organization.
