What we aim to solve
Bethesda Mission seeks to assist those experiencing homelessness, addiction and abuse. We support them by first assisting them with food, clothing, medical care and other basic needs. It is by first meeting their basic needs and forming a relationship with them that we are able to then address their addiction issues.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Men's Mission
At the historic facility at 611 Reily Street, Bethesda Mission is Harrisburg’s only homeless shelter for men, offering comprehensive services, including long-term recovery, for those in need.
Community Center
Bethesda Mission Community Center exists to develop meaningful relationships with children, teens and families in the Harrisburg area and guide them into a relationship with Jesus Christ so that they can be a positive influence in their homes, schools, and communities.
Women's Mission
Founded in 1983, the Women’s Mission provides lodging for single women as well as mothers and their children with a focus on long-term recovery.
Bethesda Mission Food Bank
Bethesda Mission Food Bank exists to provide food, household and other needed items for our various ministries. We also partner with other non-profit organizations in the Central PA region working toward the shared goal of providing food to families and individuals in need.
Medical & Dental Clinics
Bethesda Mission provides excellent medical and dental care for its residents and takes referrals from other agencies in the Harrisburg area treating uninsured and under-insured homeless and low-income persons.
Mobile Mission
The Mobile Mission unit brings hope and critical help to Harrisburg’s street population every Friday and Saturday night.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Once basic needs are met and an individual is in the recovery phase, equipping each person with tools for life is the aim of Bethesda’s community re-entry blueprint. From learning to balance a checkbook to finding a Christ centered, nurturing church, these foundational skills help existing guests lead lives of character and great purpose.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Men and women guests are assigned a personal life coach or counselor to work with them on a one to one basis throughout their stay with us. Needs are met and struggles are dealt with. Children coming to our Community Center are given a new focus on how to navigate life's challenges and ultimately succeed. Our Workforce Development Program ensures they are able to succeed in planning for their future.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Bethesda Mission staff is highly trained and has experienced a high level of success in mentoring and counseling our guests. With the support of our donors and partners, we are poised to continue this trend into the future!
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In August, 2019, Bethesda Mission held a grand opening celebration for Phase I of the Community Center Renovation. This project included adding a full size gymnasium, a computer lab, activity rooms and more for the teens attending the Center. Phase II will be next, reconstructing an adjoining facility for children which includes a modern kitchen and Community Room. This entire project will double or even triple the number of children and teens that we are able to reach.
We have just completed construction on a 19,000 square foot women's shelter to replace the old building. This is allowing us to increase the number of women staying at the shelter from the past 25 women to 51 women and their children.
