What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Community Development and Human Services

Currently supporting 46 programs in 18 countries of Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe, OICI strengthens the capacity of local community leaders to organize and run their own self-help development programs and projects and to meet the needs of the poorest of the poor. OICI"s local affiliate organizations serve society"s most economically and socially underprivileged in their home communities. OICI provides technical assistance to local programs that offer technical and vocational skills training, rural development and agricultural outreach, credit extension to farmers, health and nutrition education, and programming in microenterprise and small-business development. In certain countries, OICI supports post-conflict reconstruction and rehabilitation programming that includes community sensitization, reintegration of refugees, the internally displaced, and former combatants (including child combatants), psychosocial trauma counseling, and training in conflict resolution. OIC affiliates have spurred the growth of thousands of new income-generating enterprises in Poland, the Philippines, and Africa. Supporting environmental and human health, OICI has helped communities create tree nurseries, reforest denuded lands, and replenish overworked soils by training community leaders in sustainable farming practices that help curb soil erosion and stop deforestation while augmenting food production.
