What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
German-American Heritage Museum of the USA
The German American Heritage Museum of the USA located at Hockemeyer Hall (719 6th Street NW) in Washington, DC serves as a national museum for the historical accomplishments of German-Americans. Opening in March 2010, the Heritage Museum tells the story of all Americans of German-speaking ancestry and
how they helped shape our great nation today. This is accomplished through varying exhibits, collaborations with other organizations, and a number of events throughout the year.
Distinguished German-American of the Year Award
The "Distinguished German-American of the Year" is
the only national award which recognizes the outstanding achievements of an American
of German ancestry.
German Language Classes
Beginning in March 2019, the GAHF/GAHM is offering German classes for beginners. The departure of the Goethe Institut has left a void, and we believe that the GAHM is in an excellent position to serve a population that is interested in learning a new language, and perhaps reconnecting with its roots.
Seasonal, temporary exhibits
Each year, the GAHM offers between three and four temporary exhibits that cover a broad range of topics. We just concluded a toy exhibit in March 2019, and are now launching Culinary Customs: A Taste of Germany.
