Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Concert Series
The ANNA Crusis Women's Choir puts on a series of four concerts over two weekends each year. These include two fall concerts, usually in early December and two spring concerts, usually in early June. Each concert weekend is focused on a particular social justice theme. These performances offer space for people to gather, to comfort and heal, to sing together, and recharge for moving forward in difficult times. Choir members are concerned with how best to respond to community needs and the printed program highlights Philadelphia organizations where people in need can receive assistance and people seeking to help others can find volunteer opportunities.
Some recent concerts have been "Stronger for the Struggle", a response to the escalating tensions of the times; “This Land Is Our Land”, focused on bringing us together; "Still Singing for Our Lives”, about the need for all our voices, singing and speaking out; “Song is a Traveler – Music of Longing and Belonging”, a concert with Moira Smiley about the need everyone has to belong somewhere, to something, to someone; and most recently, “Sing Truth to Power”, about standing up for what’s right and helping make the way for positive growth. The upcoming concert in December 2019 will be “Keep Hope Alive”. With selections from Björk, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Holly Near, Diana Ross, and a winner of the DeCapo Chamber Choir Competition, ANNA is teaming up with Sister Cities Girlchoir for a concert experience filled with energy and empathy, insight, and exhilaration.
Music Outreach & Collaboration
ANNA Crusis participates in a number of philanthropic and/or outreach events each year. Each Winter, there is a free concert with the Philadelphia Gay Men’s Choir, usually in collaboration with a vocal/arts group from a local school. ANNA has sung at the Bucks County Women’s Choral Festival and for the Association for the Study of Women and Mythology. ANNA has a relationship with Songs in the Key of Free, a not for profit program dedicated to challenging mass incarceration through musicianship and songwriting. Events with Songs in the Key of Free have included performances at Eastern State Penitentiary, SCI Graterford, the Village of Arts and Humanities, and the Painted Bride Art Center. In the past year, ANNA performed at the Philadelphia, Haverford, and Swarthmore Public Libraries, the Philadelphia Art Museum, and with the Philadelphia Jazz Project. The choir often participates in area marches and political activities.
