What we aim to solve
Charitable giving has long been a proud and vibrant tradition in the United States, far outstripping rates of giving by many other developed countries in the world. Yet persistent challenges remain. In recent years, donors and nonprofits are being asked to do more and more to address high need and support vital services within communities across the country and world. To do so, donors and nonprofits both must endeavor to be more strategic, efficient, and impactful in their work. We aim to help make this happen.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Donor-Advised Funds
Vanguard Charitable increases philanthropy and maximizes its impact over time by offering a simple way for donors to support favorite charitable causes over the short and long term. Donors make irrevocable, tax-deductible contributions to accounts established with Vanguard Charitable, and then recommend grants to public charities over time.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Vanguard Charitable aims to increase philanthropy and maximize its impact over time. We do this by sponsoring donor-advised funds—a powerful giving vehicle and a tax-effective way to consolidate, accrue, and grant money to nonprofit organizations. As one of the largest grantmaking organizations in the country, our goal is to continue to empower individuals to strategically fulfill their charitable goals and positively impact the people and causes they care about most, both today and tomorrow.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We work to drive sustainable growth within the nonprofit sector by providing the highest-value donor-advised fund. We grow our donors' charitable assets through Vanguard investments and offer some of the lowest fees in the industry. We prioritize long-term, strategic philanthropy to meet the most challenging needs in society. Our commitment to operational excellence ensures that our donors can amplify their charitable impact over time.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We maintain a unique, ongoing relationship with The Vanguard Group, Inc., which founded Vanguard Charitable in 1997 as an independent public charity. Vanguard continues to provide us with investment management and administrative assistance pursuant to a service agreement. The relationship allows us to pass along to our donors the direct benefits of Vanguard's at-cost investments and is strengthened by our commitment to shared values of diversification, long-term planning, and low costs.
Our core belief is that individuals and families at all levels of wealth can be philanthropists. We consider the responsible management of our charitable assets, along with steadfast governance on the part of our staff and operations, to be essential to our work. We help donors convert appreciated securities and other complex assets into charitable dollars that can be readily disbursed to charities. We conduct due diligence and other administrative tasks on behalf of our donors to ensure ease in giving and compliant granting. We draw on industry expertise to help donors research organizations and collaborate with their chosen nonprofits. We encourage a multi-generation approach that helps individuals and families establish and carry on a giving legacy. We are there each step of the way.
Vanguard Charitable team members are united by a common interest in charitable giving and public service. We put our mission into action by organizing staff fundraisers and office-wide community service days, and by encouraging team members to take paid time off for volunteer work.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since our inception in 1997, we've granted over $14 billion (via more than 1 million individual grants) to nonprofit organizations around the country and world. Our number of grants issued and total dollars granted have increased each of the past five years. In 2018, our grants for a single calendar year exceeded $1 billion for the first time in our history. In 2019, 2020, and 2021, this total increased again.
As Vanguard Charitable looks forward, we will remain responsive to our donors and nonprofit partners. As a result of conversations with donors, for example, we now offer the Nonprofit Aid Visualizer (NAVi)™, a groundbreaking new tool that provides a wealth of data on an interactive platform, making it easy to find charities solving the problems donors care about most. We've also unveiled Vanguard Charitable Smartfunds for Hunger & Homelessness, along with our recoverable grant program. As always, we are committed to providing these services at a low cost.
To continually improve our donor-advised fund and the service we offer, we plan to:
• Tailor our technology platform to donors' ongoing needs and maintain our commitment to making giving easy.
• Further spread awareness of the benefits of giving with a donor-advised fund through presentations, research papers, commentary, and discussions with philanthropic leaders.
• Partner closely with stakeholders, including nonprofit organizations and financial advisors, both of whom play critical roles in strategic charitable conversations with donors.
• Continue to drive down the cost of giving so that the most money possible goes to the charitable organizations that need it.
