Programs and results
What we aim to solve
The primary concern Grand Teton Music Festival (GTMF) is addressing is how to maintain and expand an audience for classical music in Teton County, Wyoming. Nationwide, the number of individuals attending classical music presentations has declined more than 3% from 2002 to 2017 according to the National Endowment for the Arts. All presenters of classical music, including Festivals and Symphony Orchestras, are spending significant resources to address this trend, especially as it pertains to traditional classical programming. Compounding the issue is a rapidly diversifying audience demographic (including aging patrons) and increased competition for attention from sources that didn’t exist 15 years ago (Social Media, Smart Phones, high quality Video Streaming). Although GTMF is tucked away in rural northwest Wyoming, the market dynamics affecting metropolitan presenters of classical music are the same.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Grand Teton Music Festival
The festival was founded in 1962 by the Jackson Hole Fine Arts Festival to foster classical music experiences for performers and audiences and to improve and enrich the cultural awareness and opportunities for people in Wyoming and the adjacent area. Sixty years since its humble beginnings performing in a tent at the base of the Tetons, the Festival is now sought after for both listeners and performers alike as a destination to experience the finest in classical music throughout the summer.
The Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra consists of top talent from across the country, including more than 200 musicians from 80 orchestras and 55 institutions of higher learning, many performing together each summer for over 25 years. The Festival also welcomes some of the most sought-after soloists and visiting artists in classical music today.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Grand Teton Music Festival is aiming to increase attendance to classical music performances in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. In order for GTMF to remain relevant, financially stable, and sustainable, the organization needs to focus on having a strong attendance base to traditional classical music presentations. The audience provides the foundation for a strong and diverse donor base.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Grand Teton Music Festival has focused on three strategies for increasing attendance. The first is to program classical music that has broad audience appeal. We ascertain the potential appeal by regularly surveying our audience for feedback. The second strategy is to increase local marketing efforts, both traditional print and online media outlets. The third strategy is to keep ticket prices at an affordable level, provide free tickets for all students and offer reduced day-of ticket rates.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Since 2014, Grand Teton Music Festival has implemented these strategies primarily through recruiting and developing a high-performing staff. Having an experienced, talented and professional team that can deliver on programming, marketing, and customer service has been essential in advancing the organization’s mission.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Grand Teton Music Festival has seen a nearly 70% increase in total attendance to its summer festival. Events that take place during the remainder of the year have also seen increases.
