What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Environmental Education

The Wetlands Institute accomplishes its mission of education through a multi-faceted approach. Over 12,000 children visit from schools in New Jersey and neighboring states in the spring and fall. Distance-learning programs provide an opportunity to interact with students around the country while local schools are visited with hands-on programs. During the summer season, nature classes reach children in grades pre-K through 6. Our Junior Naturalist and Intern-for-a-Week programs give senior high students a chance to gain personal insight into the world of the field biologist and the environmental educator. Visitors to the Institute are shown a short film "Secrets of the Salt Marsh" followed by a visit to exhibits and aquarium that reveal those secrets. A guide takes visitors on a "salt marsh safari" on the marsh and pier extending over a salt water channel.
