What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Environmental Education
The Wetlands Institute accomplishes its mission of education through a multi-faceted approach. Over 12,000 children visit from schools in New Jersey and neighboring states in the spring and fall. Distance-learning programs provide an opportunity to interact with students around the country while local schools are visited with hands-on programs. During the summer season, nature classes reach children in grades pre-K through 6. Our Junior Naturalist and Intern-for-a-Week programs give senior high students a chance to gain personal insight into the world of the field biologist and the environmental educator. Visitors to the Institute are shown a short film "Secrets of the Salt Marsh" followed by a visit to exhibits and aquarium that reveal those secrets. A guide takes visitors on a "salt marsh safari" on the marsh and pier extending over a salt water channel.
Traveling Environmental Education Program
Our professional staff travel to schools and conduct exciting live animal presentations including topics such as Sea Creatures with Amazing Feature, Traveling Turtles, Plankton: Bugs of the Sea, Aquatic Adaptations and Saltwater Gene Pools.
Science Education at Sea (SEAS) Program
The Science Education at Sea (SEAS) program is conducted entirely on a boat! This program sails out of Cape May/Wildwood or Sandy Hook and educational activities aboard the vessel cover a broad range of subject areas including plankton, specimen collection, animal handling, horseshoe crabs and dolphins or crabbing.
Coastal Conservation Research Program
10 week summer internship program for undergraduates. Interns work closely with research scientists at The Wetlands Institute on a wide variety of research and conservation projects. Since 1989, over 200 college and university students from more than 100 academic institutions have participated in the program. Program focal points include:
- Diamondback Terrapin Research and Conservation
- Surveys of Breeding Birds in Coastal Habitats
- Delaware Bay Horseshoe Crab Research and Conservation
- Wetland Condition Monitoring in the Coastal Salt Marshes
