Programs and results
What we aim to solve
There are enormous health disparities in the communities we serve. These disparities are particularly acute for certain populations (e.g. LGBTQ individuals) and with certain types of healthcare (e.g. sexual and reproductive health). To meet this need, we work to provide care and education for communities whose needs are not being met by larger medical systems.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Medical Clinic
Family Tree Clinic’s vision is to eliminate health disparities through innovative, personalized sexual health care and education for diverse needs.
Located in Minneapolis, Family Tree Clinic has provided low-cost, patient driven health care and education services to diverse populations since 1971.
Outreach Education
Family Tree Clinic is committed to providing cutting edge, affordable, comprehensive reproductive and sexual health services to diverse communities. Part of this commitment is to offer dynamic and comprehensive education services to the community, schools, colleges, parent groups, corrections facilities, and a variety of workshops.
Our Community Education Department focuses on teaching a variety of sexual health classes in schools, colleges, community settings, and to youth in corrections.
LGBTQ Health Services
Family Tree Clinic provides a wide variety of sexual health services and specialized care for LGBTQ individuals through all stages of life, including low-cost STI testing and FREE HIV testing for all uninsured patients. Family Tree also has a trans hormone care program. This program takes an informed consent approach to hormone care with the goal of removing healthcare obstacles for patients.
Mental Health Services
Family Tree Clinic partners with numerous organizations in the Twin Cities to provide mental health services. Walk-in counseling is available to anyone in need of crisis intervention or emotional support for any kind of personal or relationship problem: family or partner conflicts, suicide, substance abuse, or any major life changes.
Advocacy
One of the many ways Family Tree Clinic serves its community is by advocating for a just society where healthcare is not politicized or stigmatized and is accessible to all. Connecting health care and education is what we do. And we do it well. Yet believing in the people we serve and showing up for our community is our specialty.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We're working to eliminate health disparities. We do this by providing medical services, community education, and operating Minnesota's state STI and family planning hotline.
We have a long history of serving people left behind by larger medical systems. Connecting healthcare and education is what we do. And we do it well.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Sexual health doesn't exist in a vacuum. That's why we offer community sex education, gender affirming hormone care, and limited primary care, along with stellar sexual and reproductive health services. We connect patients with other resources that impact their ability to access health care, including assisting them with purchasing health insurance through Minnesota's insurance marketplace. We also partner with other excellent organizations to offer therapy and mental health counseling on-site.
We also operate Minnesota's only sexual health and family planning hotline, and our staff provides health education programming across communities, including Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing folks.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have highly trained medical staff, and the largest group of providers offering hormone care in the upper Midwest. Our team of health educators presents at national conferences about our work, including sex positive sex education and have contributed data to a peer-reviewed study of the effectiveness of the sex ed curriculum we use called FLASH.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Eliminating health disparities is a huge job, and the MN Department of Health recently released a report about health disparities and their relation to institutional racism. In response, the clinic formed a Racial Justice and Anti-Oppression committee consisting of staff, board and community members to address our work to better meet the needs of those who need us most. We've made a great deal of progress in examining our very own institutional racism and the impact it has on the work that we do. Yet, there is a lot of work to do and we continue to work with staff, board and our community to do it right.
