Sudden Infant Death Program: Provision of Mandated Reporting and Bereavement Support
The purpose of this program is to assure that parents are offered counseling and supportive services after the sudden and unexpected death of an infant; to monitor and assure that coroners notify Baby 1st Network of all sudden and unexpected infant deaths under the age of 2 years; and that local health departments make contact with each family to offer support. Baby 1st Network is responsible for providing expert consultation on SIDS and SUID (Sudden Unexpected Infant Death); serving as a liaison with national local SIDS organizations and serving as a resource for SIDS research and risk reduction. Baby 1st Network, in conjunction with the Ohio Department of Health, also conducts 2 statewide SIDS Risk Reduction and Infant Safe Sleep training sessions for health care professionals, social worker, daycare providers and first responders. Baby 1st Network offers specialized grief materials to parents and caregivers from our free library and grief support through our toll-free number by volunteer SIDS/SUID parents. These volunteers provide grieving families with support and encouragement. Our Facebook, Twitter and website pages are sources of bereavement support for anyone who has suffered from the loss of an infant.
Community Engagement & Education
Our focus continues to be Community Engagement: 3 Community Health Forums were held with approximately 96 people in attendance. The goal is to address the disparities in infant mortality in African American communities by educating the community about infant mortality, SIDS and infant safe sleep practices. Our Infant Safe Sleep Mini-Grant Program was developed to increase educational initiatives in communities to share the infant safe sleep message. Each project must reach a minimum of 20 participants and 7 grants were awarded. A total of 9 activities were held reaching 626 people. In addition, we distributed 7,356 infant safe sleep t-shirts with our safe sleep message as part of our Infant Safe Sleep Program. 10, 018 "Keep your sleeping baby safe” brochures were distributed along with 13,200 other safe sleep and bereavement materials. In conjunction with ODH, we held 2 SIDS Risk Reduction and Infant Safe Sleep trainings for professionals and had 123 in attendance. Four additional Safe Sleep workshops were held across the state reaching 198 people.
