THE ORGANIZATION UNDERTOOK LITIGATION WHEN DOING SO WAS THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO ADVANCE A CIVIL LIBERTIES CONCERN. LAWSUITS FILED SET LEGAL PRECEDENTS AND AFFECTED THE POLICIES AND ACTIONS OF PUBLIC OFFICIALS. THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDED DIRECT LEGAL REPRESENTATION, AND FILED BRIEFS ADDRESSING CIVIL LIBERTIES ISSUES IN CASES INITIATED BY OTHERS, ALL ON A PRO BONO BASIS. DURING THE 2019-2020 FISCAL YEAR, ATTORNEY FEES WERE VALUED AT $100 TO $1,035 PER HOUR. THE AVERAGE HOURLY RATE WAS APPROXIMATELY $611. VOLUNTEER ATTORNEYS WORKED ON AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION MATTERS AND PROVIDED 14,875 HOURS OF SERVICE AT A VALUE OF $9,095,299.

THE ORGANIZATION'S COMMUNICATIONS AND OUTREACH INITIATIVES PROVIDED PUBLICATIONS, VIDEOS, FLYERS, AND KNOW-YOUR RIGHTS MATERIALS ON SUCH ISSUES AS VOTING RIGHTS, WOMEN'S RIGHTS, LGBT RIGHTS, JUVENILE LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE, AND IMMIGRANTS' RIGHTS, AS WELL AS A NEWSLETIER ISSUED TWO TIMES A YEAR.
