Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Anniversary of Powered Flight
The annual recognition of the "12 seconds that changed the world" - the first powered flights in a heavier than air machine, made by Orville and Wilbur Wright at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17, 1903. This celebration memorializes the great achievements of the two brothers in their quest to conquer the air.
Wilbur Wright's Birthday Celebration
The First Flight Society recognizes the birthday of Wilbur Wright on April 16th with emphasis on young people and educational events.
National Aviation Day and Orville Wright's Birthday
Aug 19th is recognized as National Aviation Day and Orville Wright's birthday. Events and programs are offered at the Dare County Regional Airport throughout the day.
Paul E Garber First Flight Shrine
The Shrine honors those individuals and groups that have achieved significant firsts in aviations development. A new member of the First Flight Shrine has been inducted during December 17 ceremonies every year since 1966 and is honored with the unveiling of their portrait.
The Society established the Paul E. Garber First Flight Shrine, a portrait gallery that surrounded the Wright Flyer reproduction displayed in the Parks visitor. Currently the Shrine is an exhibit with a digital display of honorees, along with the painting of the most current inductee.
