Equipping a new generation of Bible teachers
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Around the world, the Christian church is growing rapidly, especially across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Every day, tens of thousands start their new lives in Christ. Every week, nearly 1,000 new churches are started. This, however, has created a crisis of leadership, with estimates showing that 80-95% of pastors have no formal biblical training and are not equipped to biblically shepherd their churches to understand and apply God's Word. This is a time when the spiritual health of the church hangs in the balance. Not adequately equipped with God's Word, brothers and sisters in Christ are increasingly vulnerable to false teaching, mired in harmful beliefs and practices, and struggling to be salt and light in their communities. Around the world, the people of God desperately need biblical resources to help them understand and apply the Bible, trained indigenous leaders with the vision to shape their nations for Christ, and pastors equipped to teach the Word of God.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Langham's vision is to see churches in the Majority World equipped for mission and growing to maturity in Christ through the ministry of pastors and leaders who believe, teach and live by the Word of God. Based on what leaders around the world tell us about the need in their own countries, the strategies that accomplish this overarching goal include:
- Developing local, contextually relevant biblical resources by equipping and resourcing local publishers, writers and theologians in Majority World countries and regions. This results in the creation of much-needed biblical resources and commentaries that biblically address the issues believers encounter on a daily basis.
- Biblically-trained pastors: When pastors know how to teach the Bible, they can disciple their believers and help them grow in Christ, impacting not just their churches, but their communities as well. More than 80% of pastors have no formal biblical training – as many as 3 million around the world.
- Theological leaders: When countries have their own theological leaders that can train pastors, start Bible colleges and seminaries, the church is able to multiply leaders and be more sustainable.
Langham Partnership focuses on areas of POVERTY, where God's people are under-resourced, PRESSURE, where God's people are under threat, and POTENTIAL, where the ministry of God's Word firmly establishes the health and maturity of the emerging church in that region.
“Stott foresaw the rise of Christianity in the global south before most anybody…Langham Partnership is a leader in equipping the global church to grow in maturity. I can think of no more strategic work…this ministry has been a game changer. “ Tim Keller, Author & Pastor, Redeemer Presbyterian Church, New York, NY
“By perpetually listening to the needs of the global church, Langham is finding creative, cost-effective solutions to meet those needs…there is much to be done at this critical juncture in the history of the global church. Langham is on the forefront of bringing God's Word to the world." Mark Labberton, President of Fuller Theological Seminary and former study assistant of John Stott
“Thanks to John Stott's vision and self-sacricial commitment to the values of God's reign, and to the faithful stewardship of Langham Partnership, the seeds of radical discipleship are being sown and watered around the world by schools of biblical preachers, by biblical scholars, and by evangelical writers." Ruth Padilla DeBorst, Center for Interdisciplinary Theological Studies; Board Member and Former President of the Latin American Theological Fellowship
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Langham accomplishes our mission to strengthen and equip the global church through three interrelated programs:
LANGHAM PREACHING – Equipping Pastors to Teach the Bible
Langham partners with national leaders in the Majority World to train pastors to preach God's Word with faithfulness to the text, relevance to their own context and with clarity and boldness.
How it works
1. We go where we are invited and help grow expository preaching movements.
2. We equip and resource local pastors through 4 levels of training seminars.
3. Pastors form small groups in their communities for ongoing mentoring.
4. Pastors and lay leaders teach the Bible, helping believers growing in their faith.
LANGHAM LITERATURE – Providing Biblical Resources to Leaders & Pastors
Langham provides biblical resources to pastors, scholars and seminary libraries around the world and foster the creation of culturally relevant books, including major regional biblical commentaries like the Africa Bible Commentary and the South Asia Bible Commentary, by indigenous writers and publishers in their own languages.
How it works
1. Langham distributes biblical resources to churches and Christian schools.
2. Langham provides grants for local writers and supports local publishers.
3. Churches and schools have resources to disciple and train believers.
LANGHAM SCHOLARS – Training Leaders to Reach Nations
Langham supports the PhD studies of godly men and women who return home equipped to serve as high-level theological leaders and cultural influencers in their nations. Today, there are nearly 300 scholars serving in 70+ nations.
How it works
1. Partnering with local leaders, Langham identifies godly emerging leaders.
2. Langham scholarships and mentors these leaders through their PhD studies.
3. Langham Scholars then go on to disciple leaders, pastors, and church planters.
These three strategies are all focused on bolstering the ministry of God's Word through God's leaders. When pastors and leaders are biblically equipped to multiply disciples, the church grows in maturity, becomes salt and light in their communities and countries and becomes more sustainable.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Langham is committed to wisdom in our planning and stewardship, but we rely on God's grace to grow our ministry and multiply the impact of our efforts.
STRATEGIC PLAN
Langham's comprehensive five-year strategic plan (2017-2021) integrates the work of all programs (Scholars, Literature, Preaching) under the theme: “The Global Church: Growth with Depth."
RESPECTED LEADERS
Langham serves the global church, and our ministry efforts are spearheaded by internationally respected global church leaders. Rev. Dr. Chris Wright, Langham's international ministries director, is a world renown theologian, award-winning author of more than 19 books, and is a pastor of pastors. Dr. Riad Kassis is the International Program Director for Langham Scholars, as well as the International Director for ICETE (the International Council for Evangelical Theological Education) and respected Bible teacher in Arabic and English. Pieter Kwant, international director of Langham Literature, has more than 40 years in the business of publishing and distributing books. And Rev. Dr. Paul Windsor, international director of Langham Preaching, was raised as a missionary kid in India, received theological training at TEDS, and is a global leader in preaching and pastor training.
LISTENING POSTURE
Reflecting the heart of our founder, John Stott, Langham partnership only goes into countries or communities where we are invited. Our goal is not to set up a Langham base of operations, but rather to come alongside local leaders and offer the support, training and resources they need. John Stott's reputation around the world, described by Billy Graham as “the most respected clergyman in the world," softens the soil in some of the hardest countries. Paul Windsor, international director for Langham Preaching, says, “I find it very difficult to convey to people what it means to be part of an organization that was started by John Stott when you're traveling around these countries. It doesn't open doors. it flings open doors. He is so respected and so admired."
EQUIPPING THE EQUIPPERS
Our approach respectfully walks with indigenous pastors and leaders, investing in their sustainable growth and serving them as they serve God's Kingdom. Pastors, churches, publishers, writers and scholars catch the vision and multiply their ministries by equipping and shepherding believers to growth in Christ.
GLOBAL PARTNERS
Langham recognizes the strategic importance of partnership and that's why we are committed to working closely with a range of other ministries. We work in collaboration with organizations like ICETE, Overseas Council, and Lausanne—and especially with local churches, seminaries, Bible colleges, publishers and other local training ministries.
COMMITTED TO THE WALK
Langham is committed to making long-term investments that impact generations as we walk with the global church, listen to the needs and respond in a way that advances the ministry of God's Word to God's people.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Langham's vision is a God-sized vision - to see churches in the Majority World equipped for mission and growing to maturity in Christ. The work we have done, by God's grace, is providing sustainable growth through the strengthening of seminaries, Bible colleges and churches. Langham Scholars have started new seminaries, serving their countries and event their continents. This has provided stability and helped equip leaders who are trained to disciple believers. Langham Preaching has equipped pastors to teach God's Word, which transforms lives and communities. Langham Literature has provided the biblical resources for pastors, leaders, students and churches to learn and apply God's Word in their text. Langham's approach has been effective and transformational because it is focused on providing God's Word to God's people.
But there is much work to do. Even with our training of 10,000+ pastors annually, it is estimated that more than 80% of pastors around the world have no formal training. Even as 300 theological leaders are leading the church in their nations and having great impact, there is need for hundreds, if not thousands of additional leaders across the Majority World. And even as books like the Africa Bible Commentary impact millions of lives, a majority of believers do not have contextually relevant biblical resources to help them understand what it means to follow Christ in their context.
We move forward in faith, knowing that our vision and mission are firmly rooted in God's Word. God longs for His church to grow in maturity and calls His people to make disciples of all nations. Langham knows we cannot individually disciple each new believer, but our mission, by God's grace, is to equip the equippers, pastors and leaders, to make disciples.
