Our programs

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Member Development:

In order to develop a United Way member organization, UWI looks at the level of local interest and corporate support in the development of that United Way; its access to start-up resources; its potential to become financially independent; and the amount of UWI assistance (time, travel, etc.) that is required to determine the local communities it can support with limited resources. UWI also appoints a person from its staff or an experienced volunteer to work closely with the community that would like to establish a United Way organization.

Member Support:

In order to provide its affiliates with opportunities for continual growth and improvement, UWI organizes worldwide and regional conferences at which affiliates assemble to share best practices; attend sessions to strengthen strategic planning; and learn how to start or improve workplace campaigns, allocate resources, assess community needs, build strong voluntary boards, and manage finances.

International Grant Making:

International grant making constitutes a complex cross-section of challenges in the way of differing cultures, communications, and currencies. Guidelines imposed by the Patriot Act have created a regulatury environment that demands enhanced due diligence. UWI's on-the-ground knowledge of community social needs, its organizational due diligence, and its guidance streamline the process of international grant making and make international philanthropy safer, easier, and more effective.

Since its inception, the Donor Advised Giving (DAG) program has become an increasingly popular giving vehicle. Currently, UWI makes tax-effective donor-advised grants in more than 80 countries. DAG contributions are invested in a professionally managed and monitored pool of funds. In 2004 alone, 55 donors participated in the Donor Advised Giving Program - 42 were corporations or foundations.

Focus on our Affiliates:

The affiliates that make up the international United Way System are a league of organizations with a mission to improve quality of life in their countries and communities. UWI's member organizations are located in developed and underdeveloped countries, and they focus on long-term strategic support to address such basic needs as clean water, low-income housing, women's rights, basic education, early child care, and access to after-school programs.
