Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Incorporated in the state of Nevada and governed by a local volunteer board of directors, Goodwill of Southern Nevada increased the employability of populations who face multiple challenges to finding employment. These challenges include generational poverty; housing insecurity; insufficient education, skills, or experience; physical or mental disability; lack of transportation; history of incarceration or substance abuse; or other unique barriers to employment that an individual cannot resolve without assistance. At Goodwill, Goodwill of Southern Nevada believes everyone who wants to work should have the opportunity to secure careers with meaningful employment. Work builds character, furthers independence, and builds stronger communities.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Goodwill of Southern Nevada is an innovative and sustainable social enterprise that accepts donations of unwanted goods and financial contributions from the community. Those gifts in turn fuel free career services include career coaching, skills training, and job placements that help job seekers gain meaningful employment and thriving careers in healthcare and other growing industries.
Our free career services include personalized career guidance, planning, and support; a computer lab with access to the internet and printers; resume development; job placement within a network of employer partners eager to hire work-ready candidates; and supportive services that help with transportation, childcare, work cards, and other urgent needs to turn letters of intent into a gainful employment.

What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Goodwill helps people through career counseling, employment placement services, training programs, and other free support services delivered through two full-service Career Centers.
In 2022, Goodwill of Southern Nevada received the maximum three-year accreditation from CARF, an independent, nonprofit organization providing accreditation services worldwide at the request of health and human service providers . CARF accreditation attests to our meeting rigorous quality standards that require our programs of service to be comprehensive; operated by well-qualified staff; developed and reviewed regularly in partnership with local businesses and employers; and successful at preparing participants to reach their fullest potential.
More than 90 percent of our total revenue is generated through retail, post-retail, and e-commerce operations. The balance is raised through government contracts, grants, and contributions. Since all overhead and management costs are covered by Goodwill’s retail revenues, 100 percent of financial gifts to Goodwill of Southern Nevada directly support our workforce development programs that train participants for placement into meaningful employment with upward mobility.
In addition, Goodwill is a vital contributor to sustainability. Leveraging our core model of repurpose and reuse, we kept more than 38 million pounds of goods out of local landfills in 2021 alone.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since our founding in 1975, Goodwill of Southern Nevada has sustained programs of service focused on reducing the impact of poverty through workforce development. The organization has served more than 75,000 Nevadans through job training, education, and supportive services. In 2021 alone, 2,000 people were placed into local jobs generating over $51 million in earned wages.
Goodwill of Southern Nevada is elevating workforce development practices by pioneering train-to-hire programs that usher participants directly into employment with opportunities for advancement. Among these programs are proprietary Training SprintsSM — accelerated professional skills training that prepares and moves participants into a high-demand career as quickly as possible.
Since 2021, Goodwill of Southern Nevada has launched the following:
- 90-Day MA: This collaboration with NV Careers trains medical assistant candidates for a paid 1,200-hour externship with a local health system as they earn their Certified Clinical Medical Assistant certificate. The third cohort is now midway through their training.
- CNA Training Program: A partnership with NV Hope guides participants through Goodwill professional skills workshops, a weeklong bootcamp, an overview of healthcare careers, exposure to local healthcare leaders and hiring professionals, motivational speakers, experience in the simulation lab at UNLV, and professional career preparation.
- Stagehand Training Program: This two-week course opens doors to careers as conversion technicians or stagehands in the events industry. The curriculum includes OSHA 10 certification and leads directly to employment with Rhino Staging, with candidates qualified by nonprofits serving the reentry population.
