The Smoky Mountain Knoxville Chapter of CISV USA is a community of dedicated volunteers, creating opportunities for all ages to experience the excitement of cultural diversity through our educational programs. We are founded on our belief that peace is possible through friendship - and that the real difference can be made by starting with children.

Since 1951, CISV has been offering a range of local activities, international camps, family-hosted exchanges and community-based projects. All CISV Programs have a Peace Education focus,which we use to inspire our participants to become Active Global Citizens. As CISV continues to grow around the world we remain united as an organization by our educational principles. These reflect the way we think and behave. Our Educational Principles are that we appreciate the similarities between people and value their difference

Village

A Village is a 28-day camp attended by 12 delegations of 11-year-olds. Each delegation comes from a different nation and is made up of two boys and two girls accompanied by an adult leader. A Village is planned, funded, staffed, and hosted by a Chapter from one of the approximately 60 CISV National Associations from around the world. Six Junior Counselors (16-17 year-olds) participate in each Village.

A Step Up is a 23-day camp attended by nine delegations of 14-year-olds or 15-year-olds from nine different nations. Each delegation is made up of two boys and two girls, accompanied by an adult leader. A Step Up is planned, funded, staffed, and hosted by a Chapter from one of the approximately 60 CISV National Associations from around the world. Participants in a Step Up are encouraged to take part in planning and running the daily schedule and activities.

Interchange is a home-based program that matches a delegation (composed of up to 12 youth plus one or two adult leaders) from one nation with a similar delegation from another nation. Each delegation both hosts and is the guest of its partner delegation. The hosting and travel phases may take place in a single summer or over two summers. Each phase is two to four weeks in length. Interchange involves a high degree of family participation.

Seminar Camp is for 17-18 year-old youth. Each Seminar Camp is attended by 28 male and female participants; there are no more than four participants from any single country at any Seminar Camp. A Seminar Camp is planned, funded, staffed, and hosted by a Chapter from one of CISV's National Associations from around the world. Participants at a Seminar Camp are given complete responsibility for planning and running the Camp's daily schedule and activities.

A Youth Meeting is an eight or 15 day camp attended by (1) delegations of four to six youth age 11-15, accompanied by an adult leader or (2) individual participants age 16 - 19. A Youth Meeting is planned, funded, staffed, and hosted by a Chapter from one of the approximately 60 CISV National Associations from around the world.

CISV, Inc. is a global organization dedicated to educating and inspiring for peace through building inter-cultural friendship, cooperation, and understanding. We aim to help our participants develop the skills they need to become informed, responsible, and active global citizens who make a difference in their communities and the world. The glue that underpins all of our programmes is friendship, in line with our founding belief that peace is possible through friendship and mutual understanding. We are striving as a local chapter to be a visible, active youth peace organization by increasing involvement in our community.

CISV accomplishes its goals through age-appropriate, research-based games, activities and evaluations within the setting of multi-week camps attended by participants from all around the world. All activities have as their underlying theme our five core values: friendship, inclusiveness, enthusiasm, engagement, and cooperation.

CISV, Inc.'s chief assets are the volunteers from its 60 member nations who for six decades have made the dream of peace through friendship come alive for thousands of children and youth. Each year, these volunteers plan, staff, fund and execute some 200 multi-week camps throughout the world, bringing to these efforts their individual expertise from a broad range of fields and backgrounds.

CISV is an educational organization that is working within the greater culture to transform attitudes and actions. By raising awareness of injustice, prejudice, and ecological abuse that exist within our own culture and then providing opportunities to turn that awareness into action, CISV works with its youth to become instruments of change. Each summer, our 11 year olds participate in “Rich/Poor Day" that allows them to experience inequalities that exist within society, “Handicap Day" that has them live with a created disability for a few hours, and a cultural stereotype activity where they are challenged by other countries' stereotypes of the United States. By experiencing these problems, discussing what it is like to experience them, and then discussing where they can see such problems in their local communities, our 11 year olds' views of their lives and their communities are transformed. All CISV programs are designed to provide experiential learning activities that are age-appropriate and based on our four content areas of diversity, human rights, conflict and resolution, and sustainable development.
