Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Recovery Program
Light of Life provides comprehensive services to the poor & homeless. The Mission's Longterm Program empowers men and women to achieve healthy, productive, self-sufficient living. Components of the program include: addiction recovery counseling, transitional housing, education and career training, life and parenting skills, treatment referrals for mental health issues, activities for improving socialization and relationship building, after-care and mentoring and other services. Shelter accommodations for men, women, and children include over 40 beds. Hours of education, counseling, training and other services exceed 110,000 hours annually. We offer daily meals for the public at large, chapel services, and a short-term case management program. The Mission serves over 3,000 different individuals, 100K meals and 34K nights of safe shelter annually.
Education and Employment
A component of the Recovery Program, Education and Employment provides men and women access to job resources, on-site health education, group activities, tutoring in core subjects, computer classes, skills assessment and training, and career opportunities through a partnership with Bethlehem Haven.
Addiction Recovery
Centered on faith-based principles, various aspects of addiction recovery include the 12 Step program--with emphasis on the first three steps--Recovery bibles, relapse prevention counseling, behavior and cognitive skills and individual and group counseling.
Women and Children's Program
Single mothers and their children whose lives have been adversely affected by substance addiction, homelessness, poverty and abuse receive off-site housing, case management, counseling and career services in Light of Life's Women and Children's Program. Initially, families are stabilized through rental assistance, food, clothing and household needs. This long-term program (12-18 months) provides 20 hours per week of addiction, parenting and life skills counseling, household management, family therapy, education and career training, child care and other services designed to reunite and rebuild strong family units. Up to 30 families are served through this program at any given time.
After-Care and Mentoring
Through its After-Care and Mentoring program, Light of Life provides both men and women graduates with a comprehensive network to help ensure their lifelong recoveries. Graduates enjoy opportunities to manage/serve on an alumni board, engage in social activities, and have access to mentoring and other supportive services.
Food Pantry
Light of Life operates a free food pantry serving local families experiencing food insecurity. The pantry is open weekly on Wednesdays from 11 AM to 1 PM for residents of the Pittsburgh North Side Neighborhoods including zip codes 15212, 15214, and 15233. Staff may also refer those in need outside the the pantry's service terriotory.
Donation Center
Light of Life's Gift-in-Kind Program accepts material donations such as clothing and personal hygiene items. The items are distributed directly to the public either through 'free-store' shopping experiences or in partnership with other non-profits.
