Mission

The purpose of the Penn Area Library is to select, make available, and maintain resources in a variety of formats, meeting the educational, informational, and recreational needs of our community. The Penn Area Library offers this service to all persons and exists to stimulate ideas and learning, and to enhance the quality of life for those we serve.

One Book, One Community

One Book, One Community connects communities in Westmoreland County while promoting literacy by asking every Westmoreland County resident to read the same book and engage in discussions throughout the county. One Book, One Community celebrates local history, authors, and topics of interest.

Informal book discussions are held monthly at Penn Area Library. There is no registration, fee or on-going commitment to participate and all are welcome at any time.

Children and their parents/caregivers participate in a story time led by the children's librarian, and enjoy a free-play session with blocks and other construction toys.

Children and their parents/caregivers enjoy a book read by the children's librarian, participate in music and movement, and learn about colors, letters, and numbers.

Children and their parents/caregivers listen to a story read by the children's librarian, participate in music and movement, learn about colors, letters, and numbers. A simple craft is also included. Multicultural books, games, and activities are an essential part of this program.

This program helps young children build reading and language skills. Through our activities and events, children will gain self-confidence and a love for reading, books, and the library.

This program prepares children for success by developing their early language skills and giving them motivation to read. Our events and activities foster a positive attitude about reading, books, and the library. The program also helps children maintain their reading skills during summer vacation, and provides access to experiences that further their sense of discovery.

This program motivates teens to read and discuss literature by emphasizing the enjoyment in reading; the high levels of literacy needed for higher education and future employment; and success in the reading comprehension portion of standardized tests.
