What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
One Book, One Community
One Book, One Community connects communities in Westmoreland County while promoting literacy by asking every Westmoreland County resident to read the same book and engage in discussions throughout the county. One Book, One Community celebrates local history, authors, and topics of interest.
Wednesday Morning Book Club and Thursday Night Book Club
Informal book discussions are held monthly at Penn Area Library. There is no registration, fee or on-going commitment to participate and all are welcome at any time.
Books & Blocks
Children and their parents/caregivers participate in a story time led by the children's librarian, and enjoy a free-play session with blocks and other construction toys.
Toddler StoryTime
Children and their parents/caregivers enjoy a book read by the children's librarian, participate in music and movement, and learn about colors, letters, and numbers.
Preschool StoryTime
Children and their parents/caregivers listen to a story read by the children's librarian, participate in music and movement, learn about colors, letters, and numbers. A simple craft is also included. Multicultural books, games, and activities are an essential part of this program.
Annual Summer Reading Program for Pre-Readers
This program helps young children build reading and language skills. Through our activities and events, children will gain self-confidence and a love for reading, books, and the library.
Annual Summer Reading Program for Children
This program prepares children for success by developing their early language skills and giving them motivation to read. Our events and activities foster a positive attitude about reading, books, and the library. The program also helps children maintain their reading skills during summer vacation, and provides access to experiences that further their sense of discovery.
Annual Summer Reading Program for Tweens & Teens
This program motivates teens to read and discuss literature by emphasizing the enjoyment in reading; the high levels of literacy needed for higher education and future employment; and success in the reading comprehension portion of standardized tests.
Annual Summer Reading Program for Adults
Encouraging adults to experience the joy of reading.
