What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Preservation of analog material. We have a large repository of analog material (photographs, manuscripts, marriage records, immigration records, etc.) dating from the formation of the county representing a large cross-section of history.

The Civil War Series includes a three-week pairing of educational courses, taught by Mr. Frank Lorello, and historians covering local history and re-enactors. Partnering with the Little Beaver Historical Society’s Judy Foster educate the young historians about the local involvement of Battery B and 100th PA Volunteer Infantry; local re-enactors such as the 10th PA Reserve Volunteer Corps, Company G Re-Enactors from Mercer, PA set up camp on the backyard of the Joseph A. Clavelli Cultural Heritage Center. Tackling the hot temperatures during the anniversary weekend of the Civil War battle, the students and guardians travel to Gettysburg National Military Park for a personal battlefield tour, encompassing the Pennsylvania Monument and Cemetery Hill. Following the tour, the students then travelled through the house where the only civilian casualty, Jenny Wade, was shot.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Digitization and accessibility of the material through the creation of an cloud based virtual repository that permits password protected access to our researchers and members

Various volunteers with expertise in areas such as photo digitization, data conversion, optical recognition, transcription. These volunteers take specific analog material and through the digitization process, preserve and prepare it for access through our virtual server. The original analog materials (which are all historic in nature) are then stored under conditions that allow us to protect their integrity over time and thus prevent them from deteriorating.

In addition to our volunteers specific skills at converting analog to digital materials, we have climate controlled archive storage, and for the newly digitized material, an accessioning system to make easy retrieval of the material when necessary.

A digital virtual repository has been created, maintained and made accessible to account-holding members.

Thus far, we have digitized approximately:

95% of our photographic collections
50% of our immigration records collection
We are maintaining a "no-backlog" of current donated and acquired materials

What's next is to continue digitizing the remaining parts of our legal collections: e.g. marriage licenses, wills, deeds, tax records
