What we aim to solve
We are working to address the need for environmental and historical preservation.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Kane Woods Nature Area
The Kane Woods Nature Area is a 75 acre area of preserved greenspace in Scott Township and provides habitat for many species of animals. The Scott Conservancy has developed walking trails on the property and has opened the area to the public. It is used year round on a daily basis by local residents and has also been used by various organized walking groups. A number of groups also use it for environmental education. The primary user for environmental education is the Jewish Community Center, but it has been used by a number of girl scout and boy scout troops.
Traffic Island Beautification
The Scott Conservancy maintains a traffic at the corner of Greentree and Cochran Roads. It is maintained in partnership with Scott Township for the community.
Environmental and Historical Education Programs
Presentations vary from year to year. 2017 programs were on gardening and coyote education. The Jewish Community Center uses our Kane Woods for environmental education year round.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our organization has 2 main goals. Our primary goal is environmental preservation and education. Our second goal is historical preservation. A large section of the 77 acres we own and protect as green space is located near the old Neville Plantation and the site of the Whiskey Rebellion. While protecting this diverse area for environmental and historical purposes, we also maintain walking trails on the property to provide recreational opportunities for the public and environmental education.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The Scott Conservancy owns 77 acres of green space in Scott Twp. and Mt. Lebanon. We maintain 2 1/2 miles of walking trails on the property While much of the property is left pristine, these trails are open to the public to appreciate nature and to encourage good health. The trails and area is also used for environmental education by various groups during the year. It is also used on a weekly basis by children from the Jewish Community Center. During the year, we offer various programs on environmental and historical topics. We have also established an apiary on our property to help increase the bee population and have open areas planted with vegetation to support the bees.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our organization has about 150 financial supporters. With their donations as well as some township support and a number of dedicated volunteers, we have been able to maintain our trails and offer our educational programs.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
So far, we have been able to maintain the 2 1/2 miles of trials we have developed. In the near future, we would like to add improvements to our trails. Particularly we would like to add steps in a few areas. There are also water drainage issues on our trails that we need to address further.
