What we aim to solve
The Mario Lemieux Pediatric Cancer Institute seeks to not only provide cutting edge care and trials for patients, but also attract and retain high level researchers. A tumor suppressor was found in our Lymphoma lab at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Their discovery led to more NIH funding. Additionally, we plan to continue to grow our Austins Playrooms program to reach more children and families. 43 playrooms have been established with several playrooms planned or under construction. The Mario Lemieux Immunotherapy Center that was established in 2018 and is currently under construction due to a COVID delay, will expand the continuum of care from blood cancers to solid tumors at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and work in concert with our established Mario Lemieux Center for Blood Cancers. The Lemieux Innovation and Research Fund at AHN Cardiovascular Institute continues to thrive. Our researchers amaze us with their progress!
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Mario Lemieux Center for Blood Cancers
The Mario Lemieux Center for Blood Cancers was established in 2012 at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center to provide a patient focused outpatient center with comprehensive care for all types of blood cancers and disorders
including, Leukemia, Lymphoma, and Multiple Myeloma. The Mario Lemieux Immunotherapy Center was established in 2018 at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and is under construction.
Austin's Playrooms
Austin's Playrooms benefits families and improves the quality of a child's hospital experience whether as a visitor or patient by providing cheerful playrooms that are safe, calming and comfortable. 43 playrooms have been opened, including three military playrooms.
Mario Lemieux Lymphoma Center for Children and Young Adults
The Mario Lemieux Lymphoma Center for Children and Young Adults was established at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC in 2014. The Lemieux Lymphoma Center is the first of its kind, focusing on clinical care, laboratory research, and clinical research surrounding difficult-to-treat and rare childhood lymphomas. The Center has increased access to care and cutting-edge treatments for all childhood lymphomas, while also bringing together a critical volume of patients with rare lymphomas for research studies that can have a global impact on care.
Mario Lemieux Institute for Pediatric Cancer Research
Mario Lemieux Institute for Pediatric Cancer Research was established in October 2022 at UPMC Children's Hospital. The Institute will push the frontier of childhood cancer research and focus on supporting future research leaders who will help generate new scientific breakthroughs and cutting-edge clinical trials in pediatric cancer research and translate that research directly to patients. UPMC and UPMC Children’s Hospital Foundation have committed to matching the Lemieux Foundation’s $5M make this a $10M project.
Mario Lemieux Innovation and Research Fund
In September 2019, the Mario Lemieux Foundation made a $1 million gift with matching funds from Highmark Health to establish the Division of Cardiac Electrophysiology (EP) at Allegheny Health Network’s (AHN) Cardiovascular Institute. The $2 million investment will support medical research and the development of innovative therapies and technologies for heart rhythm disorders, a cause close to Mario Lemieux.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Goals
- Open two new playrooms in 2024; provide maintenance on existing playrooms in 2023.
- Increase awareness of our programs in both pediatric lymphomas and blood cancers treatment and patient care and expand pediatric oncology research at the newly established research institute
-Open Lemieux Immunotherapy Center in 2024
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
- Continue following the established MLF Strategic Plan as updated in November 2022
-Continue following the Playroom specifics of the plan and raise the appropriate dollars for these goals to open more playrooms
- Continued support of our existing programs in both pediatric lymphomas and blood cancers treatment as well as patient care
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We feel confident that we will meet these goals given our proven track record. Our Board and staff are fully committed to the success of the organization.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The Mario Lemieux Foundation is consistently reaching those in need. With 43 Austin's Playrooms, we estimate that we have reached over 2 million children and families through our rooms. This is an exciting benchmark and we will continue to reach more kids to make their hospital experience a positive one.
The newly opened Mario Lemieux Pediatric Cancer Institute will prove cutting-edge care and clinical trials for patients. The Institute will also ensure that the most talented researchers are recruited and stay in Pittsburgh to support this project.
The Lemieux Innovation Fund at AHN's Cardiac Institute is making incredible strides in afib research. We expect this project to continue to help more individuals with new clinical breakthroughs.
Additionally, in our Lymphoma Center for Children and Young Adults, our researchers and clinicians are the best in their field, and we feel confident they are making big strides in quality treatments. They recently found a tumor suppressor and that is a huge find in this field. Their discovery led to more NIH funding and will potentially change the way lymphoma patients are treated. We expect our pediatric oncology program to grow.
Finally, with our Center for Blood Cancers, we are treating over 30,000 patients annually in the state-of-the art outpatient center that did not exist 30 years ago when Mario went through his experience with Hodgkin's disease. we expect those patient numbers to grow. Our Center is unique as it uses the patient-centric model which brings coordinated care and services to the patient, eliminating wait times and multiple stops during their visit. Our continued goal there is to make it as easy and comfortable for the patient as possible. Additionally, the opening of the Mario Lemieux Immunotherapy Center in 2024 (projected), will expand our reach to patients by seeing not only patients with blood cancers, but also solid tumor cancers.
