CERGE-EI FOUNDATION
Economists Shaping the Future
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Education in economics is one of the least reformed areas in the post-communist world. In most institutions, professors are paid below poverty line salaries and as a result must hold down multiple jobs. Teaching materials are outdated and professional development opportunities are few. Poor instruction leaves future voters and leaders with little understanding of the workings or underlying logic of free markets. Young people are robbed of a quality education that can aid them in thinking critically about the problems facing their societies. This subsequently impedes the prospects for greater openness, growth, and prosperity in this important part of the world.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
1. To promote the western ideals of free and open inquiry and nondiscriminatory education.
2. To educate economists for government, academia, and industry in countries where such skills are critically lacking.
3. To promote research in theoretical and applied policy-related economics, especially with respect to the transition from communism to free markets.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
CERGE-EI Foundation is actively seeking donors and grants to support its initiatives in the region. The two main ones are:
CERGE-EI Foundation is one of the main supporters of CERGE-EI, the first and most significant Ph.D. program in economics in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. CERGE-EI's mission to address the critical shortage of market economics expertise in the post-communist region has expanded to serve emerging economies worldwide. CERGE-EI is not only a top research institution, but is also actively engaged in policy research through its think-tank, the Institute for Democracy and Economic Analysis (IDEA).
CERGE-EI Foundation operates a Teaching Fellows program, which aims to strengthen the quality of economic education throughout the post-communist region. It does so by providing supplemental income to selected western-trained academics who choose to work in academia in the region. But it goes well beyond providing additional income, it creates a network of professionals facing similar challenges and experience.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The Foundation is led by senior professionals with experience in business and academia. For nearly 30 years we have been successful in raising funds to support our mission, both thanks to engaged and experienced leadership of the Board of Directors, and dedicated team members, who handle everyday operations.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Over 500 graduates from M.A. and Ph.D. program at CERGE-EI.
Over 140 000 students reached by the Teaching Fellows at more than 180 universities in 25 countries in the target region.
More than 230 faculty participants in 5 countries who successfully completed the Faculty Development program.
Our main goal is to strengthen the Teaching Fellows program by diversifying and expanding its funding.
We also aim to support CERGE-EI in attracting strong candidates for its programs.
