Passavant Memorial Homes Foundation

Passavant Memorial Homes Foundation was created in 2001 to support Passavant Memorial Homes and its commitment to enriching the lives of persons with intellectual disabilities and behavioral health needs. The Foundation ensures the financial stability of Passavant’s quality programs, which care for spiritual, social, physical, and emotional needs while promoting choice and independence.

In 1861, the Rev. Dr. William Alfred Passavant purchased a farm in Rochester, PA, his immediate interest being the establishment of an orphan’s home for girls. In the spring of 1863, 25 girls were moved from the Pittsburgh Infirmary to the Rochester Orphan’s Home, which was dedicated in July of the same year. In early 1895, the orphaned children were relocated to a home for boys and girls that had been erected in Zelienople, PA. On June 6, 1895, exactly one year to the day after Dr. Passavant’s death, the Passavant Memorial Home for the care of Epileptics was dedicated, with Rev. William Alfred Passavant, Jr. as the first superintendent. Additional buildings were added at Rochester as growth from the original 24 residents continued. Today, Passavant Memorial Homes actively supports over 800 individuals living with intellectual disabilities in more than a dozen Pennsylvania counties.

Today, Dr. Passavant’s original act of compassion and generosity has grown and flourished under the leadership and guidance of CEO and President, Rick D. Senft. We believe Dr. Passavant would be very pleased with the caring, professional reputation that this organization has developed over its continuing 116-year history. The lives of innumerable individuals, both those supported, and those providing the support, have been tremendously enriched over these years.

How do we, those entrusted today with preserving and expanding this treasured legacy, ensure that these supports continue in the same caring and compassionate manner we believe Dr. Passavant would find so pleasing? By encouraging individuals like yourself to become part of Dr. Passavant’s legacy through a gift to the Passavant Memorial Homes Foundation. Working together, we can ensure Passavant’s future.

Passavant Memorial Homes is committed to developing new support systems for individuals with intellectual disabilities and behavioral health needs.
