Mission

The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), formed in 1909, is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination. The NAACP strives for a society where all individuals are treated fairly and equally. The NAACP is a national organization with state and local chapters including ones in Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh Branch provides legal assistance, through the Duquesne University Law School, for those with civil rights complaints; assistance to veterans to secure their benefits and/or access other services; scholarships to 15 college students; monitors Pittsburgh Board of education meetings to voice concern about inequality of education in African American schools; and holds an annual Human Rights Dinner.
