STAR LEGACY FOUNDATION
Because every pregnancy deserves a happy ending
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Every year, 25,000 babies are stillborn in the United States in the days and weeks before their anticipated births. For the majority of these families, a cause of death is never known. Families impacted by these tragic losses have increased rates of mental health concerns and family disruption. Research regarding prevention of stillbirth and related deaths including neonatal death and miscarriage has been lacking. The rate of stillbirth has remained unchanged for over 50 years. Star Legacy Foundation aims to reduce the rate of poor pregnancy outcomes by supporting research and promoting education regarding prevention efforts. Further, we strive to ensure every family receives optimal physical and emotional care when prevention isn't possible.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The long-term goal of the Star Legacy Foundation is to reduce the stillbirth rate in the United States by 20%. This will be accomplished by providing education to health professionals and expectant families, supporting research efforts aimed at prevention efforts, increasing awareness of stillbirth and supporting healthy pregnancies, and advocating for families throughout pregnancy and beyond.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Star Legacy Foundation goals are supported by programs and projects including holding the International Stillbirth Summit every other year, presenting numerous educational events to health professionals and the community, holding awareness events across the US and advocating for unborn babies. Additionally, we conduct research and sponsor ongoing studies.
Family Support is led by a peer support program, a support line staffed by certified grief counselors, and support groups facilitated by trained professionals. Groups include those for bereaved parents, pregnancy after a loss, parenting after a loss, and grieving grandparents/extended family members.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The Star Legacy Foundation is fortunate to have a community of hundreds of eager volunteers and individuals with business acumen that is vital to our success. Grieving families look forward to putting their grief to work in ways that will make a difference going forward.

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
