2030 Districts

2030 Districts are a unique private/public partnerships, bringing property owners and managers together with local governments, businesses, and community
stakeholders to provide a business model for urban sustainability. These cooperative teams develop and implement creative strategies, best practices and verification methods for measuring progress towards the 2030 Challenge targets.

Across North America and Canada, 2030 Districts are forming to meet the targets called for by Architecture 2030 for both existing buildings and new construction. These 2030 Districts are at the forefront of a national grassroots effort to create long-term partnerships, coalitions, and collaborations to meet achievable and measurable goals for existing urban and suburban areas and infrastructure, as well as for new development, redevelopment and infill. As of October 2015, 2030 Districts have been established in 11 cities: Seattle, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Denver, Toronto, Stamford (CT), San Francisco, Albuquerque, Dallas, and San Antonio. A number of other cities in the U.S. and Canada (and potentially abroad as well) have expressed interest and are in the process of 2030 District organization.

Population(s) Served

An Internet-based platform, the 2030 Palette provides the framework for a visually rich, systems approach to the information, applications, and tools needed to create sustainable, resilient and carbon neutral built environments. The Palette contains 54 initial component elements that populate the platform. Each component element is constructed in relationship to other component elements through linkages and interactions. Component elements in the 2030 Palette are called “Swatches.” Each has a descriptive name-– e.g., Growth Boundaries, Urban Infill, Habitat Corridors, Transit Oriented Development, or Heat Island Mitigation. Swatches are ordered logically by scale from region to city/town, district, site, building, and form a coherent design and planning process. Highly complex technical language is designed to be accessible to users at all levels of the planning and building process.

Population(s) Served

Architecture 2030 has achieved impressive shifts in outlook and practice within the Building Sector internationally. Our initiatives play a central role in the process of empowering urban planning and Building Sector professionals, and creating the framework necessary to facilitate systemic change, both in the United States and abroad. Architecture 2030 has committed to working with municipal and state agencies on the adoption of advanced building codes and other approaches to creating jobs and curbing fossil fuel consumption and GHG. Architecture 2030 has provided the research to support updating codes and provides updates and reports on building code equivalents and adoptions. This work has developed into Architecture 2030's Urban Climate Initiative. Other initiatives include the 2030 Challenge, the 2030 Challenge for Products, The Roadmap to Zero Emissions, the 2050 Imperative, and The China Accord.
