Pudiyador Association for Community Empowerment

aka Pudiyador   |   Plymouth, MI   |  www.pudiyador.org

Mission

Pudiyador takes a cradle-to-college approach to community empowerment. Pudiyador works with disadvantaged communities in Chennai (India) to provide access to resources and education that allow communities to break cycles of generational hardship. As an organization, we take a multi-pronged and holistic approach to ensure that we are working with the needs of all stakeholders within the community. As an organization, we operate under the premise that all Pudiyador Centres will become self-sustaining within a 5-10 year period. To be rooted in any community, we strive to build capacity of community members and empower them to manage and successfully run a Pudiyador centre in this time period; thereby allowing for future generations to take the concepts of Pudiyador forward on a needs basis.

Cradle Health

Many young women in disadvantaged communities in cities belong to a ‘transition generation’: they are migrant workers or come from families that have uprooted themselves from their villages and moved into crowded, and comparably expensive, shanty neighbourhoods in the city. The wisdom and assistance of senior generations and long-term community connections are not present to guide and support new mothers in raising their infants. These young women struggle with access to information on parenting to raise healthy and happy children. Equally, they are often unaware of the available healthcare government schemes and do not receive sufficient medical support during and post pregnancy. Pudiyador’s Cradle Health Program is designed to fill in all these gaps: we provide a nurturing environment and a safe space for young women to discuss their fears, questions, and concerns (much like the feeling of “going to mother’s house”) and also share their personal experiences and wisdom. We present well-researched information to young women, especially the new and expectant mothers, about nutrition, personal health, hygiene, and good child raising practices. We also guide them on utilizing existing healthcare schemes that are provided by the local and national government. Our goal is to foster well-informed, confident, competent mothers who can create and rely on a support network in the community, and empower them to raise happy and healthy babies.

Population(s) Served

Pudiyador appreciates the critical gap between impoverished children’s school education and their real-life needs. Pudiyador works to bridge this gap through after-school programs for preschoolers, children and teenagers in addition to comprehensive community empowerment programs for adults. The Preschoolers Program is designed to build physical and cognitive development as well as increase literacy skills in Tamil and English - creating solid foundations to balance the equation and give disadvantaged kids a headstart in their education. The Children’s Program was created to address the ‘all-pass system’ used by the public and private school systems within Tamil Nadu (TN), India. All-pass systems are used to manage large numbers of students, but result in higher rates of children with poor foundations in literacy and numeracy. This is often due to larger class sizes, and low student to teacher ratios. Pudiyador believes that solid foundations in literacy and numeracy will likely increase chances of children completing their education, pursuing further studies, and contributing to our mission of breaking cycles of intergenerational poverty. The Children’s after-school Program is designed to provide a supportive environment to solidify these foundations, build confidence in verbal communication as well as reinforce positive social development. Pudiyador believes that holistic education must include exposure to a wide range of extracurricular activities with lots of time for play! As a continuation of the after-school programming, the Early Teens’ Program is designed to provide a safe and fun learning space for at-risk teens. Pudiyador believes that it is important for teenagers to receive consistent support in completing their education. Additionally, Pudiyador aims to address the lack of gender and sex education provided within the school system. Finally, all programs emphasize school attendance as this is not always an existing standard.

Pudiyador’s after-school programs are divided into three age groups to foster the intellectual, social and cultural development of children.
- Preschoolers after-school Program (ages 3-5)
- Children’s after-school Program (ages 6-10)
- Early Teens’ after-school Program (ages 11-14)
