Hudson, NY   |  https://redapes.org

Mission

Orangutan Outreach's mission is to protect orangutans in their native forests of Borneo and Sumatra while providing care for orphaned and displaced orangutans until they can be returned to their natural environment. If they cannot be released, we will do everything in our power to ensure they have a life of dignity and the best possible long-term care. We seek to raise funds and promote public awareness of orangutan conservation issues by collaborating with partner organizations around the world.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Orangutans are critically endangered in the wild due to rapid deforestation and the expansion of palm oil plantations into their rainforest home. The UNEP estimates that the forests of Indonesia are being cleared at a rate of 6 football fields per minute every minute of every day. If nothing is done to protect them, these gentle, intelligent creatures will be extinct in just a few years. Orangutan Outreach's mission is to protect orangutans in their native forests of Borneo and Sumatra while providing care for orphaned and displaced orangutans until they can be returned to their natural environment.

Many conservation efforts focus on enforcement to protect biodiversity, punishing violators with fines and imprisonment. While these are important actions, they do little to remedy the huge harm caused by actions such as illegal wildlife trade. Fortunately, many countries have legislation that allows for conservation litigation — the use of liability lawsuits to demand that those who cause harm to biodiversity be held responsible for fixing it.

We need to protect threatened species and, when they are harmed, help biodiversity to heal. Conservation litigation uses liability lawsuits to demand that those who harm biodiversity be held responsible for providing remedies to fix that harm. In many countries, existing laws would allow for such conservation lawsuits, but we are not using them yet. A powerful team of conservationists, lawyers, and economists is working to change that.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Orangutan Outreach's mission is to protect orangutans in their native forests of Borneo and Sumatra while providing care for orphaned and displaced orangutans until they can be returned to their natural environment. We seek to raise funds and promote public awareness of orangutan conservation issues by collaborating with partner organizations around the world. These partnerships focus on rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing orangutans back into safe areas of forest. In addition, we focus on caring for unreleasable orangutans for the duration of their lives in a way that provides dignity, proper nutrition, enrichment and veterinary care.

We work with partner organizations in Borneo and Sumatra, Indonesia to make sure they have the resources required to achieve our goals. We raise funds and promote awareness online and off through various campaigns throughout the year.

We have dedicated support base build up over the past 12 years and a growing social media presence numbers in the tens of thousands. We seek to communicate with our supporters regularly and activate them to unify our voice to help save the orangutans!

We have seen orangutans who were rescued as orphans be successfully rehabilitated and released back into the wild, where they are now giving birth and raising infants of their own.
On an organizational level, we have been able to build a large, growing network of supporters who help us spread the word raise awareness of the need to protect critically endangered orangutans in the wild. This is a big problem and we cannot do it alone. We need the support of orangutan lovers everywhere if we are to prevent orangutans from being pushed to extinction in the wild.
