Mission

To strengthen our community through bicycle education and safety programs.

To create a community of healthy active individuals by providing hope to the less fortunate through support, training, and access to bicycles.

To complete this Vision in the next 5 Years we will:

Provide collaborative youth bicycle education through formal afterschool programs that develop creativity, self-esteem, responsibility, community and leadership.

Repurpose and recycle bicycles, promoting environmental sustainability.
Provide access to affordable bicycles for adults and youth who live below the poverty level.

Partnering with other local non-profits by providing free bicycles and helmets to children and adults.

Promote bicycling to improve healthy lifestyles and transportation necessary to secure and retain employment.

Provide youths with community service hours through a unique experience learning a skill and giving back to the community. Hopefully the experience will encourage them to give back throughout their adult lives.

Teach adults in recovery basic bicycle mechanics. They also learn team work, leadership responsibility and ability to follow directions, a good foundation to help them obtain a job and be successful at keeping a job.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Earn a Bike Project

For adults and children. The program provides a pathway to exchange work for a bicycle. We receive referrals from non-profit organizations that help individuals in early recovery programs and homeless programs. Participants can also be students or anyone else in the community willing to volunteer their time. Participants volunteer for 15-20 hours at the bike shop and earn a free bicycle

Population(s) Served
Economically disadvantaged people

After school program that is designed to teach bicycle repair and bicycle safety. 4 week program that meets twice per week. We promote bicycle riding to instill healthy physical fitness habits at a young age. Participants earn a bicycle at the end of the program.

Population(s) Served
Students
At-risk youth

Jack the Bike Man gives away free refurbished bicycles and helmets to children from economically challenged families during the holidays who live in Palm Beach County. Last year we presented close to 1000 bicycles.

In a partnership with the Drug Court of the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit of Florida and the Palm Beach Probation Office we offer participants a chance to earn community service hours in exchange for their volunteer services. This is also offered to students needing community service hours or any other community member wanting to volunteer

Population(s) Served
Adults

Through a partnership with close to 20 local Title I elementary schools in Palm Beach County, we recognize students for their exemplary character. We provide a free bicycle, helmet and a lock to a student each month that has demonstrated one of the six pillars of Character that is showcased for that month at their School. The student then comes with their parents to our bike shop and help us pick out the right bicycle for them.

Population(s) Served
At-risk youth
Children and youth

We assist the West Palm Beach Police Department in registering every bicycle that is sold or given away. This registration provides the West Palm Beach Department the necessary information so that if your bike is ever stolen they have a record of the serial number when you call to make a report. This program is designed to aid in the recovery of lost or stolen bicycles.

Population(s) Served
Adults

Jack the Bike Man gives away bicycles to a variety of schools, non-profits, community organizations and churches around the county that request assistance from Jack the Bike Man

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
