ROCK THE CAUSE INC
Sustaining Change Through Music
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Rock the Cause to inspire, educate, and build a new generation of giving. Nonprofits struggle to attract millennial aged donors and volunteers. We engage the millennial audience on their own terms through music streams and downloads, classroom workshops, concerts, volunteer drives, and partnering with artists who are the voice of the generation. We introduce the millennial audiences to charities through our engagement methods. For example Rock the Cause music releases have been streamed over 27 million times. That's a significant amount of people who are discovering and supporting a cause simply by doing something they love - listen to music. We also conduct classroom workshops to educate students on nonprofit volunteer and career opportunities. We help them organize music concerts, student music compilations, and we provide internships that give the students hands-on real life job experiences.

Rock the Cause Vocational Discovery Program
Rock the Cause Business of Media Vocational Discovery Program at High School for Recording Arts (HSRA)
Over the past 3 years, the Rock the Cause Vocational Discovery program at HSRA has provided paid internships to nearly 50 HSRA students, and $80,000 in wages and stipends paid to HSRA students. These funds came from a mix of workforce dollars from the Ramsey County U-Lead program, CARES ACT Federal Funding, private and corporate donors, and community partners like Rock the Cause Records 501c3.
During the COVID-19 shutdown High School for Recording Arts vocational discovery program, lead by Scott Herold of nonprofit Rock the Cause Records, in partnership with Ramsey County U-Lead, was given special permission by Ramsey County Work Force solutions to continue having HSRA U-lead student interns work in a distance environment. Scott Herold presented the Ramsey County U-Lead program with a work plan for student to continue working from home. The plan also included a system to verify work was being completed and verified for payroll. As a result, 40 HSRA students enrolled in U-lead and CARES Act Funding continued to work from home during COVID-19.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Rock the Cause is an award-winning nonprofit community organization and record label. Rock the Cause Records has worked with some of today’s most beloved artists and has sold over 500,000 singles, and its music releases have been streamed over 30 million times, generating nearly $750,000 directed to charitable causes around the world. Rock the Cause is widely recognized as an innovative thought leader in arts education and an innovator of vocational discovery programs for youth. Rock the Cause works daily with vulnerable populations of youth to teach them about careers in the arts and entertainment industry while they earn a high school diploma. The work of Rock the Cause has been featured by Rolling Stone, NPR, Billboard, and at education conferences like SXSW EDU, Z-Voices, and RAPSA. Learn more at www.irockthecause.org
Our goal is to create social and economic access to underserved populations of people through education, our record label, and community events.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We use our record label, concert events, volunteer drives, and high school music program to raise funds, increase awareness, and recruit volunteers, for other nonprofit organizations.
In August of 2017, High School for Recording Arts (HSRA) in partnership with nonprofit record label Rock the Cause Records, implemented a paid Business of Music and Media internship program. Since that time, the internship program has provided close to $100,000 in W2 wages and stipends to over 50 HSRA students living in Minnesota. In the Spring of 2019, the same program was replicated at High School for Recording Arts Los Angeles and 24 students were paid close to $20,000 in W2 Wages.
The wages and stipends for these programs are funded by private donors, corporate partners like Men's Warehouse and Music-Go-Round, and funds are administrated by Rock the Cause Records, Ramsey County Workforce Solutions, C.A.R.E.S. Act funding, and the State of California Jobs Program for Youth.
In the Business of Music internship, students earn experience in a real-world media environment, managing HSRA's bourgeoning record label Another Level Records, and award-winning HSRA made documentary films like RONDO: Beyond the Pavement.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The worlds only full time nonprofit record label dedicated to releasing music that impacts charity.
Worldwide music distribution
Worldwide social media and digital media capabilities
Large and small event capabilities
In classroom workshops on community service and the business of being a nonprofit
Large and small scale volunteer drive capabilities
Partnerships with celebrities and music artists across the globe
Vocational Discovery Programs in High School and Colleges
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Perhaps you know our work. We are the same record label that helped Zach Sobiech to launch his charitable single 'Clouds'. Zach's music continues to inspire millions around the world and has nearly raised 1 million dollars for pediatric cancer research. More recently we released the inspirational hit song 'Hold You Up' by Matt Hires benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities. Then there is also the critically acclaimed Farewell Transmission the Music of Jason Molina, which Rock the Cause released to much fanfare from the likes of NPR, Rolling Stone, Spin and more! The list goes on!
What you really need to know is simple. Over the past 13 years Rock the Cause has grown into one of the nation's most respected music nonprofits. We have helped dozens of organizations raise awareness, new stewardship, and hundreds of thousands of dollars. Through our work in colleges and high schools across the region, we have helped hundreds of students to discover an opportunity to give back.
We plan to expand our vocational discovery program across schools in America working in distance learning environment.
We are not a pass-through organization. We work hard to raise money. Sometimes it is a 99 cent song download. Other times it is a large scale concert event. All of this requires money for administration, technology, professional services, equipment, etc. We deliver impact on a grand scale. Music is our front line social mission.

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
