Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Public Health

Caritas, an organization initially created by Pope Paul II within the Catholic parishes, heads the work of public health in Lamontagne.  Projects they have initiated include the training of public health care workers, and the construction of individual and public latrines.  Future programs will be to increase the number of workers, improve public understanding of personal hygiene, and introduce a low-cost latrine so that every family can have one.

Population(s) Served

OPADEL Association leads the Lamontagne community with efforts to improve the agricultural output of an area in which 99% of the households farm for their primary income source.  Projects have included animal husbandry (chicken coop to improve egg production and poultry health), classes for students at the local schools, reforestation of hillsides, and a community sharing of tools and seed.  Future projects will build on the past as well as introduce and improve growing techniques of various plants such as yams and mangoes.

Population(s) Served

Comite Education Lamontagne (CEL), whose board is made up of the eight local headmasters in the area, meets to discuss issues and establish priorities for local needs.  In the past, they have used funds to train teachers and to purchase items to help teachers improve their methodology and presentation of subject matter (including globes, maps, dictionaries and two laptops.)  Future projects will continue to improve teachers' abilities to teach.

Population(s) Served

Past funds have implemented micro-lending programs to two women's associations in the area, Famn Se Lavi (6th cycle of loans) and Famn Deside (1st cycle of loans) and training to all women for better business practices.  Future funding will look to encouraging entrepreneurship in the area.

Population(s) Served

Associations Famn Se Lavi and OPADEL initiated small manufacturing (hats and backpacks respectively) in the region with start up funds from YEL.  Future projects will expand on these endeavors adding in product lines and locations for distribution.
